From a distance you just think of it as a regular old dead tree trunk hanging by a thread, but when you get closer to it then you see its more than a simple tree trunk, but WOW you see something totally different and the contour shading/detail is just something else!. But the choice of watercolor and the depth reminds of those old kid-like cartoons like Watership Down or The Peanuts specials.

How you painted the ground and the grass it gives texture and a mystic feel. The detail in the statue's face perfect and reflects well with the landscape, as I can see you used blues first and repetively painted over it, which gives both the water and statue a wet reflection which is smart. I also love the choice of colors...in an aquatic environment such as this you really captured the marshy feeling of a fall wintery woodland, but also you'd never expect it to be in the winter season either which is what looks like too me. Honestly the high choice of illusion is a bit much, but then it works to a good degree; pretty like a YinYang conflict between the techniques, that gives the muddy ground a delicious look to it.

Thank you for commenting!
I've looked up the cartoons you've mentioned and while the first one does seem to have something to do with this style, with the second one I am at loss
Could you elaborate on the style you would expect to see for such a subject? I could not quite grasp what you meant by "conflict between the techniques".

You're welcome.

I guess what I mean about "conflict" is that the illusion property of the artwork is so high with the realism of the picture it conflicts with the person's point of view, the techniques focused upon here, and not to mention the seasonal part of nature, but in addition it works amazingly well in this case. You'd never expect such correlations in such a piece, that honestly it would maybe some of th best artist in time to a state of awe or peace (maybe I'm just spitballing here). Give it to you, play the Watership Down soundtrack with this or one of the classic Peanuts soundtracks with this and you'll see everything compliments each in the manner of historics, mystery and story.

Oh yeah and about The Peanuts, here is what I meant by its painting style being similar, a few pictures from Bon Voyage Charlie Brown and Snoopy Come Home.

Going off of what I'm seeing here, this is the first time I've critiqued something seemingly done on textured canvas. Here's a few thing I much like of this drawing, and they are: nice use of watercolor, the sculpture in the middle transitioned from what would otherwise be a tree. Another is the vibrant feel of the lake, although the reflections seem to be more substantial than the actual objects themselves. The woodland trees go nicely with the mood of the wintery lake, but the ice around the lake seems out of place with the absence of snow around the grass. The clouds in the back are darkened in such a way to simulate an aurora in the daylight, which is also moody. But on the other hand, you could stand to slightly smooth out the rather choppy shadowing and what looks like an islet. Beyond these flaws, keep up the good background work.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment!
I have to still figure out the balance between the reflections and the actual objects.
Ice without snow is pretty common and is actually my favorite weather, so I was biased in painting it I have added snow on the first painting of the series because I was afraid of painting a large area of dried grasses, but here I decided to give it a try.

Greetings there! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Good points:

- I like the nature in the background and yet how you added something that naturally stands out because it looks weird and man-made. It's like the unnatural within the natural. XD

- I like the details you added there. Like, the individual pieces of grasses and the reflection in the water which makes the artwork overall more realistic. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

Improvements/Suggestions:

- The white at the edges of the lake makes it look like it's snowing and it's kind of makes it unnatural considering that there isn't snow anywhere else.

- The reflections on the lake look more like actual object underwater than reflections. I suggest making it more faded.

Hope this helps! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Thank you for your critique!
That is exactly the point: putting man-made stuff into a natural environment
White stuff on the bank was supposed to be ice and not snow...
mm.. I'll have to think about the reflections next time I paint them

Hi!  I’m here from with some constructive criticism.

First of all, I like the composition, color scheme, and various textures you used.  I like the way the image is almost cut in half by the river, giving it a balanced look, but the incline of the division looks natural.  I usually prefer bright colors, but the natural hues are equally appealing in this piece. The rough texture of the cloudy sky looks especially nice in contrast with the smooth water.

I also like the way you used multiple colors for the grass.  The white blades of grass add a lot of depth and texture to the foreground, especially in contrast to the dark shading.  The only part that needs more contrast, in my opinion, is the bush in the bottom left corner of the painting, which looks kind of flat because all the branches are the same color.  The subtle shading on the trees looks fantastic, and I think applying the same technique to the bushes would fix the problem.

The reflection of the trees looks a little larger than the actual objects, which is kind of odd, but I do like the way you blurred the mirror image.  I’m really impressed with the glassy surface of the water in general, which I know from experience is hard to convey.

The idol is a really unique and interesting subject to focus on, and I think it adds an almost surreal quality to the picture because you depicted it as the only man-made object in completely natural surroundings.  While the landscape alone would make a very interesting picture, the idol makes it even more unique and interesting.  The wood texture looks highly realistic as well.

Overall, I think the textures you incorporated into this painting make it highly compelling to look at.  I’m amazed by how in-depth you portrayed even the tiniest details, like the small tree branches and the individual blades of grass.  Both the composition and technique are nearly flawless, making it honestly kind of hard to critique.  Keep up the great work!

Thanks a lot for commenting! The bush is a bit lazy, thanks for mentioning. The reflection went wrong from the very beginning. It is frustrating when something works the first time you do it just by chance (on the first painting in the series) and then you cannot replicate it.

Hello, I'm from ProjectComment

This is a rather great painting here. I love how you’ve done it. Water color or acrylic was used here? The canvas texture comes out a little bit, and it adds an interesting effect to the sky a bit. The clouds and the blue that make up the sky give it a cold winter effect to it, which is what I’m guessing, is happening here. It looks cool and cloudy in there. The dead grass shows so, and I rather like it. The detail for the individual weeds and shrubs that are almost at death’s door are very well done. I like the detail you’ve put into it. I get a good idea of how it’s like there. The water looks rather nice, and I like how you’ve added in a reflection and some water waves near the shore.

Though I do feel the reflection could be handled a bit better. It looks a bit different from the details that you’ve put into the tree. Though no worries, they’re tough to do. Try mimicking the shape as best as you can, and then try blending it softly into the water so it’s not too sharp. It’ll look like a reflection, and you can make waves in the water if you want to with that. Though it appears calm here.

That’s a rather interesting wood object there. Is that part of this are? I like how you’ve selected to keep I centered, but it doesn’t divide your picture. It lets our eye go from sky to the intricate details you’ve put into the blades of grass. Even the tree in the background helps flow the drawing in a different point of view. It’s full of color even though the palette is of simple colors. Nothing sticks out too much here; it all goes with the shades of brown, yellow, blue, purple, and grayish white.

Amazing  work as always. Keep it up the great work.

Thank you for commenting!
It is a watercolor on heavily textured paper
You are right about the reflection here. I made it the 'right' way on the first one of the series (thumb in the description), but here something went wrong starting with the outright purple trees on the background.
Wooden object is an idol, or rather a modern stylization thereof.

Ah, another wooden idol statue from Estonia, just like the "Lonesome Socrates", nice!
This one is slightly more realistic in carving style, but its stance is interesting, bent backwards, as if
the statue had just calmly laid down to ponder what's going on with the world around it...
Man, I gotta visit Estonia again some day and see these statues in Tartu!
