First off, I'd like to say that I really enjoy the setting and mood of this picture. It seems very calm and still. Your lovely color scheme helps to bring this feeling about.
Your use of watercolor is very fascinating. You blended your colors very well and I especially love the way you painted the water. Very lovely indeed!
A couple of the little branches are disconnected but overall, you've done very well on the dead trees. The sky could use some more color variation. Maybe some big clouds
As for the mountains in the back, they're a little too splotchy for my tasted and their color bleeds a bit too. But that's just a nitpick. The grassy area in the foreground is really good. I love the way the colors blend there. As for the figure itself, it took me a while to decipher that it's stone. For a moment I thought it was some sort of fabric XD Anyways, good job on it as well. I can see the little bit of greenish color is either moss or rust. Overall, this is a very lovely work! Hope my critique has helped you in any way and have a good day/night :>

Thank you for commenting!
I am not entirely happy with the woods (not mountains) on the background, it happnes when you rely on the paper and paint to work for you rather than control it. And the statue is actually wooden (not that it makes a difference), so I probably should pay more attention to the textures in the future.

Hi there, I'm here from ProjectComment ,

First I would just like to compliment you on your water.  It looks phenomenal and I genuinely thought you'd painted on top of an actual photograph.  Hell, a part of me still thinks that's what this is!

So, first, aside from what I've already said on the water, the work done on the ground looks great too, showing a good understanding of how landscapes work.

That said and on to the potential more work needed side, the foreground seems to have been almost rushed.  Where you have a beautiful background of pretty much photo-quality in some places, the foreground looks almost comic inspired.  If that is the intention, then fair enough it wouldn't be an improvement as that's a style choice.  But if it was intended to blend in with the background, it stands out too much.

It does create a nice stark contrast between the two however and this is what adds to the perception that you have indeed painted it onto a photo.

Overall, I think this is a great piece, as are the others posted in the description, but it may be worth putting in the same level of detail in to the foreground as you do the background.  Keep up the great work .

I wanted the foreground to act as a veil that separates the viewer in the dark woods with the statue from the lighter serene river. But apparently it looks more like a bug Thank you for mentioning it, I will think of other ways of achieving such effects

Hmmm, I'm not sure how it would work with watercolour, but with acrylic or oil, you could potentially use a glaze or simply feather the work at the front to blend it out more, this would give it a sort of blurred look.

Might be something similar that you could use for waters

It can work on a paper of a different kind... I would rather think of painting some more tree branches and making the existing ones darker.

Could also work .  Good luck with what you decide though!

Hello! I'm from and I'm here to critique on your artwork! ^^

First of all, I want to say that the guy who commented here before me is absolutely right: the composition and the colors in this is amazing. This piece has a very calm atmosphere to it and when it appeared in my notes as a thumbnail, i also thought this was a photograph. Amazing job!
I really love how you painted the grass, the trees and the landscape on the other side of the river ^^
You didn't add too much details to the trees that are far away (which would be destracting, so this is positive )
You also did an amazing job at the perspective

Although this an amazing painting, i still have some minor things to improve ^^
After taking a look at some of your other paintings, I saw that the sky here is a little bit flat. Adding some clouds or lighter shades of blue, maybe even yellow tones, near the horizon would add way more detail to it. Adding darker tones at the top of the painting would do the job too (since this is watercolor, adding lighter tones wouldn't be possible, so I'd go for adding so0me darker shades of blue)
I also think that adding some highlights on the river itself would improve this painting. The reflection of the trees on the water is well panted, but what I mean is: add some sunlight sparkles to the water to indicate some tiny waves. The water is moving and also reflecting the sunlight, so it would look most natural if you did so. You could maybe use some white acrylic paint or gouache for this.

The stone figure looks a little bit flat to me and the streakyness of it in the coloring doesn't really fit to the other parts of the painting. i think you should go for a smoother look in some kind of way, but I guess this is a personal preference of me and you could just ignore this last point if you want to ^^

All in all, this is a great painting ^^
Keep it up!

Thanks a lot for your thoughtful comment!
Some darker tones on top would have helped indeed, although I wanted the sky as plain and flat as (realistically) possible. Thank you for mentioning it. However, I am afraid that highlights on the river would change the time of the day (late sunset) and the mood drastically, so I'll reserve it for another painting, as ripples do add visual interest.
The figure is made of wood and I was trying to mimic the old wood texture by applying streaky strokes, but again, thank you for drawing my attention to it!

I´m from

This painting is awesome. A-WE-SOME!

To begin with, the composition and the execution are wonderful. The colors and tones applied, each stroke executed, as is balanced with the character that, even seem to merge with the background and join with this ...

I also love the immense details applied and that honestly, it looks more like a photograph than a painting.

Without a doubt, this is one of the best jobs I've seen in my life

I actually thought this was a photograph!

This is amazing! Up close I can see the watercolor now but as a thumb nail I thought it was real! The different shadings you have really brings out the detail from the distance, and you even have the atmospheric depth down on point! Lighter in back, darker in front. And the reflection in the water really brings out the water's texture, you even have the clouds in there. I like that you did not put much detail in the back, keeping it a bit blurred out, making the main focus the Sentinel. The branches and trees around it are also finely made, they are shaped very well and are shaded to the point they don't get lost with each other and make one big mess. They are separated very well and you can even see a few leaves on the branch. This fact along with the color give a sort of 'Fall near approaching' sort of feel. Very well done!

So eerie, it kinda reminds me of the obelisks in The Witness, just standing there, being mysterious.

This is brilliantly done, I just adore the reflection on the water, the atmosphere is so perfectly captured. I can feel the slight chill in the air, and the stillness. Awesome work!

I imagined this particular idol to be some sort of a sentry of the river.
