This is an entry for 's Villains Gone Good Contest.I really loved this idea of drawing villains as good guys and the image of Shan Yu actually returning the doll with good intention was the first thing that came to mind. Also, I decided to throw in a little extra and made the owner be the little girl from Mulan II (not the best sequel, but it had cute kids). This picture pretty much consists of everything I don't like drawing: men, buff men, kids, more than one character, and iconic characters; and yet I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Let me tell you, even without the perpetually angry eyebrows and the exaggerated frown, Shan Yu is a scary dude. He's a big, like, really really really big man (probably bigger than I drew him), and he has dragon-like beady eyes. But despite all that, I hope that I could show his softer side. In case you're wondering, no, he does not have a hatchet or anything hidden behind his back, I just got frustrated with trying to draw his other hand.

This is cute. Now this actually made me squeal. I stumbled across this through Google image, and my immediate reaction was "Oh my god, that's cute. I just witnessed a gentle side of Shan Yu."
It's nice to see a gentle side of villains once in a while. I really like Shan Yu's expression here. Every time I look at his face in this drawing it just makes me go "Awwwwwwwwww~

Aw, he looks nice to me. I think you did good on it. ^_^ But I think I know what you mean about drawing muscley characters. For the Aladdin entry I did, I ended up consulting an anatomy drawing book and drew all those muscles in Aladdin's arms and chest to help me adjust the lineart and shading (...even then, it still turned out looking a bit off).
Oh, I just noticed the last comment made, about the quote about the doll. I hadn't even thought of that line, but it does really fit.

Sometimes I just look at my classmates to figure out how to draw a nose or something, I just have to make sure that they don't catch me staring at them >.< Quite honestly, I wasn't really thinking of the quote either, but it's so true

Hehe, yep, I try to challenge myself once in a while, it's definitely a humbling experience. Thank you so much! I wanted to give the idea that he has a hard outer shell, but in the picture you can see his soft inner-self shinning through. Hands are one of my foils; I've been trying to draw them for like 10 years, and they still pose a challenge :-P

Thank you! Yeah, I was originally going to draw him traditionally, but I ended up erasing and redrawing him so much that the paper just look like a mess and I decided to just do it digitally ^^"
