Description ~Skippy-Menthol is in this. (He's wearing the Adolescents shirt.)

I was going to take a stereotypically artsy photo when Thorn (wearing the Doom Hat) decided to make his own artistic statement right in front. I'm actually quite fond of the result.

That green couch has since been thrown away. I miss it dearly (even if it was crawling with scabies.)

photos like this always make me smile, makes you glad there are still people there living the punk ideal and makes you sorta wish you were back in the punk era.
having said that, reminscencing isn't very punk-rock, but great shot

Thank you. There's so much that goes into the punk ideal that I don't know which part you're talking about but I tend to agree when I see pictures of punk kids on dA. The kind of shows I go to are kind of similar to the ones that went on in LA and Orange County in the 70s so I definitely reminisce about how if I just lived a bit south of where I do now and twenty-five years before, I could have seen bands like the Circle Jerks and Black Flag and T.S.O.L in a similar context.

That sounds amazing xD Actualy you know what? Apart from Black Flag and The Clash, The Sex Pistols, my knowledge on the music is pretty limited; suggestions please?

The ideal... punk in terms of music, is how you could listen to any band, even without hearing their name and just hear that raw, energy, that anger, that attitude of fuckyouupinthefacei'mgoingtoburnthishousedown. You don't get that anywhere else and to me that's beautiful. Although, having said that, punk is obviously not just the music, or a dress sense, it's an entire mind set. I don't think you have to be drinking and wearing a mohawk to be a punk; if someone comes over to you with a joint and says 'smoke' and you look them straight in the face, say 'no' and walk away, to me that's just as punk as throwing a tv out of a hotel room window. It's the whole idea of no one can tell me who I am, or who I need to be, society won't impose itself on me; I decide and no one else. And that's what I can see in this photo.

Is there any particular scene ('70s London, '70s New York, '70s Los Angeles, '70s San Francisco, '80s Orange County, '80s East Bay, '80s Washington DC, '80s Washington State, '80s Berlin, etc.) that you want to know more bands from?

I agree with how you would define punk music but I do think that the punk attitude can carry over to many different kinds of music. (A lot of people would argue that Public Enemy and Run DMC have all the prerequisites of punk bands despite being referred to as hip hop most of the time.) I also feel like a lot of pre-punk music (especially rockabilly and some old jazz) has that attitude too.

And I completely agree with the rest of what you said too.

the 70s british and american bands would be great...
have you heard Gallows? They're a band that started out a few years ago, and I haven't heard their new stuff, but they're first album, really blew me away when i heard it; it reminded me a lot of Black Flag in terms of energy. Perhaps you might like them.

That's... very true. Then perhaps that whole ideal is an ideal stuck to music other than a specific genre. How would you define it?

Okay, I'm less familiar with British bands but I'll try:

70s Britain (and possibly some Irish, Welsh and Scottish bands as well):
The Jam
The Adverts
Siouxie and the Banshees
X Ray Spex
The Skids
999
Eddie and the Hot Rods
The Damned
Subway Sect
Buzzcocks
Sham 69

70s America (Mostly New York and California and some of these might be '80s)
Television
Wayne County and the Electric Chairs
The Germs
Richard Hell and the Voidoids
The Dictators
Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers
The Avengers
The Adolescents
New York Dolls
Agent Orange
Crime
The Blessed
The Zeroes
The Modern Lovers
X
T.S.O.L.

Those are what I could think of off the top of my head. Let me know if you want me to name more. I've heard Gallows. They have an interesting mix of influences, mostly California punk. (I hear Black Flag but I also hear mid-period AFI...) I like them.

And I find punk incredibly hard to define but I think first and foremost, it's about doing what you want to do, how you want to do it. I guess I could go into more detail about my views on punk if you want...

thanks so much! it's a great list, i didn't expect you to give me so much; i've saved it to the end of my anatomy lecture write up and will go through it and get back to you on what i liked
and i'm glad you like Gallows, it was just so awesome when i first heard them because of how pissed off they sounded.

it'd be great if you could give me your view on punk, God knows it's been ages since i've had an interesting conversation with someone on dA, so kudos on that~
