Description Allow me to elaborate:

Sticking some generic piece of official artwork or fanart of your fave character you found on a 2 second search on google into a pre made blank copy of a yu-gi-oh card is NOT art.

Sorry, they're not.

If you HAVE to make yu-gi-oh cards for the whole of the Super Smash Bros teams or the whole cast of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic because you think it would be fun to share with your friends then that's FINE , but it's not ART and it really shouldn't be in your online ART gallery. Photobucket or Imageshack maybe....

The exceptions are of course the original yu-gi-oh card artwork (which unless you're the original artist you shouldn't be reposting), artists who actually DO bother to draw their own pictures to put in the cards (heck even doodles in MS paint are better because at least the artist has drawn it themselves), and the people who re-paint existing cards to make something new and better

DeviantART is for your own artwork, not for you to repost the hard work of others without credit or consent. That's just rude...and disrespectful. Plus it's against the rules of DA

FAQ #157: Can I use things created by other people in my submissions?
FAQ #257: What sort of permission do I need to use someone else's work?
FAQ #306: Does "Crediting" let me use whatever I want?
FAQ #94: Can I use the works which I find on deviantART?
FAQ #502: Can I submit things which I made using different "games" like a doll maker or with other character generators?

Those are the rules you signed up for when you joined this ART SITE. This is not a matter of arguing semantics, it's AGAINST DA POLICY.

IMPORTANT: READ THIS BEFORE SENDING ME HATE
No I'm not hating on yu-gi-oh or the people who like it. The card game is pretty damn cool, and I love Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged. I've seen this happen with Pokemon and Magic the Gathering cards too, but yu-gi-oh cards seem to be the most common.

I also don't care if you want to make new cards for a laugh with your mates. But host that stuff on your own site, or photobucket, it shouldn't be on DA.

I think anyone out there who literally hates you for wanting people to use DeviantART for what it's actually for, needs to chill the fuck out. Hate is an extremely strong emotion; it deserves to be used in a more appropriate way than raging at someone you've never met, because they're telling you what you should already know.

The key issue for me would be using artwork they didn't make as a picture for the card.Β  The boarder itself isn't such a big issue (especially if someone has made one as a base for others to use for free) but sticking artwork in that you didn't make yourself just seems very lazy.Β  But that's just my view on it.

If your friend trapped the soul in the card themselves then it's fine, but they can't take credit for the souls trapped by others.Β  That's just not cool.

Yeah I could agree. Entire galleries that are made up of Yu-Gi-Oh card generator images that have someone else's' hard work pasted on it is very aggravating.

However, the real Yu-Gi-Oh cards themselves can have beautiful art on them. I collected cards specifically for the images of the monsters on them. Come to think about it though, I look at the card 'art' these days and it don't feel the same. MAgic the Gathering cards look more artistic in all honesty.

This is an art site. And furthermore, a site that looks down heavily on art theft. You can not Google search an image, download it, and directly submit it here without consequences. What difference does it make if your download an image, and paste it to a card and then submit it? None really. It doesn't matter if, "You added your own special effect text though."
DeviantArt is getting uncomfortably over run by this poor quality image dumping and blatant theft. Save the copy pasta for Photobucket or Imageshack like you said. It's really gross, people attempting to snag a bite size piece of undeserved attention by posting other artist's hard work. Not just reposting it, but also manipulating it, corrupting it for their own needs.

And even if by some miracle the young user includes credit for the image... we still don't want to see that kind of content here. I's not meant to be here. DeviantArt wants to see your own hand made art work.
A screenshot or a goofy meme thing uploaded to you Stash or your Scraps on occasion is.... alright. That's acceptable. We just ask, don't make your entire gallery copy pasta.

Exactly! Β Well said!

I admit this stamp is a little missleading. Β The OFFICIAL YuGiOh cards are indeed very high quality work. Β But cards made by just stuffing random google images into a card base require so little effort and are not a good example of artistic skill in any way.

CorruptTempest In reply to raygirl [2017-09-17 19:04:39 +0000 UTC]

Thanks you.

No I get what you were trying to get across. The actual cards from the game, are an art on their own... they were created by an artist for the game and show. It's the random taking of images off of other sites and even deviantArt and putting that art onto a card and calling it your own original art that pisses us off.

I thought you meant the actual cards themselves weren't art when they were made despite the fact that the manufacturers did indeed make those images. Β You're referring to fan-made YGO cards. Β That makes much more sense. Β To be fair, I have seen some people actually provide their own images for these, but yeah, copying and pasting an image isn't really art. Β Well, technically the original image they've copies was art created by someone else, but the card itself isn't because clearly little effort went into it.

Though I am wondering, what are your thoughts on photos people take themselves and post here? Β At the very least, there is a section for those here, so it makes me wonder. (That and I don't wanna feel like I've been cheating by uploading photos of my dogs here)

I agree with this because I feel that people shouldn't post yu gi oh cards with art on them that is not theirs... but in the other case they could still use the card template and draw up their own design of that monster would mean it is still art... no matter what it is still art

yuukipink [2013-08-10 22:47:06 +0000 UTC]

Let's be clear, the original artwork on the cards were done by artists and therefore art. The title is misleading but I get your explanation.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AggroVolken In reply to yuukipink [2013-10-05 01:01:03 +0000 UTC]

Wow. You missed the point entirely. The artwork put onto the cards in question are works normally not owned by the fan but is actually an official work of a character done by someone else who owns it that they found on Google. The card template is the same way. Just plastering an image not made by you onto a card template made by another company does not constitute it as YOUR ART. DeviantART even has guidelines on what is considered proper works of art in their ToC which he kindly posted in the description. Or maybe you overlooked the description like many other users normally do and instead immediately went to comments, but I digress there.

So true. Gosh! I hate it when people take pictures they do not own and put them on Yu-Gi-Oh cards or PokΓ©mon cards and then pass them off as their own work. All of that crap they do is plagiarism.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

manohman32 [2013-02-24 17:16:41 +0000 UTC]

Huh, I never really thought about that. The cards I did got me my first few followers. And I recently did a thank you set. I really never thought about how it is or Isn't art. Or even the copyright policies that go with it. I've only ever asked permission to use another member's art once. And that was a comic that still featured a bit of my own work.

But I'm not sure why most of us blatantly ignore the rules. Maybe it's because we see how much of a hassle it is to have to wait for another's consent. So we simply do it under DA's radar. I'm not sure but it's my best guess.

And I'm not sure why we make these cards. Maybe it's the fascination of the actual cards. Seeing all these different monsters and spells. And all the things they could do. And so when a generator came out, we just wanted to play around with what characters to use and what effects they can use. Again, just guessing.

But this has made me start asking permission all the time. So thanks.
