Description Here's a little set of mundane sketches I've been struggling with for the past couple weeks. I'm trying not to get bogged down illustrating every single scene from the origin, but I do feel like it's important to the Cousland story and very under represented.

Meeting Arl Howe is a really interesting interaction, if you didn't already know he was going to be a traitor (because he's voiced by the fabulous Tim Curry) you really have to ferret out his darker side through dialogue choices. He initially does sound like just an old war buddy turned politician when he is talking to Bryce; reliving old battles and joking about their age. He dialogue with the your Cousland is still fairly innocuous, while he compliments you and makes some suggestion that his son (or daughter if you are a male) may be interested in spending more time with you, hinting at future alliances. He plays his role very well. But if you press him in certain ways he does give a little more than he should. In my play through Arlana was very polite, a little embarrassed about her fathers flattery and Howe's bringing up Thomas. But there was one particular dialogue choice, something about thanking him for fighting with their family or being a friend to her father or some thing… he just starts to squirm uncomfortably. I thought that was well done.

To me Arl Howe is envy personified. He wants everything that isn't his, and he wants the best of all of it. Power, respect, every kind of success in public and private. He attaches himself to influential friends to help climb the ladder, and makes his decisions based solely on his own self interest. He's also a bit of a sadist, as you find out later. I can only imagine how he seethes while he watches Bryce's success as a popular Teyrn, and has his "perfect" family paraded in front of him. As soon as he has decided the Couslands are a liability he has done his best to attach himself to the Mac Tir family. I imagine he would have eventually found a way to betray them as well, after all, for all their faults they are much nobler than he is.

He's a really fascinating and terrible character. This set of drawings started out with me just wanting to practice that ratty angular face they gave him, and evolved into the whole scene here. I imagine that Eleanor would at least insist, while they had old friends in the castle, that Arlana change into something more fitting for company. I find it hard to believe that my noble character would literally walk into every place in her armor. I tried to incorporate some of the design of the other noble dresses into what she is wearing.

Also I need to work on my 3 1/4 view faces. So frustrating. I think I redrew some of these poses twenty times. >_<

My real name is Angel Howe(pronounced how) so this caught my eye lol. My family dates back to Lord Howe who fought in the American Revolution, he was a British general.

That's so cool that you know that!  I would love to know more about my genealogy.  I'm sure you would be a much nicer Howe than this one.

I am so bad at drawing costumes but I love the idea of your character having normal clothes instead of ALWAYS being in armor.

Also I don't wanna draw armor all the time.  Haha.

I noticed the first or second time I played Cousland, when I /really/ paid attention to his face during that dialogue option, he seemed to almost...have some sort of regret, because he knew he was about to murder this family. Obviously it didn't stay with him long at all, but..still.

I loved that.  They didn't have to do that, but they animated it in and it's wonderful. It seems like just for a moment he has trouble maintaining whatever lie he is using to justify the murder of this family.  He is so bitter, but they do go back.  Unfortunately the psychopath side of him comes out instead… but I guess if it hadn't we wouldn't have a Cousland Warden.  So there's that.

I found it really interesting where, when you finally track him down and kill him, he says "I deserved more."
I always saw that as him trying to convince the warden that his actions were justified, but I'll bet you he was angry then for fear of facing the Maker.
Then again, I always read too much into these things.. xD

But yes, I love that they did that tiny thing. Imagine Howe and the Teyrn when they were young with their small children, and then Howe remembering that in that moment. Dang.

Aaaugh, it's hard not to hate him more if he knew them as babies.  But I agree that he has to be the master of rationalizing his motives, probably more the Loghain?

Hated the guy the moment I saw him. And after everything else he did, I took great satisfaction in finally seeing him brought down. The only circumstance in which I'd show mercy is if Nathaniel had been introduced and asked me to spare him.

I loved that they did create Nathaniel to balance out the Howe household though.  I would love to learn more about why Rendon turned into such a monster though.

Thejboy88 In reply to RanmaCMH [2014-04-14 07:20:25 +0000 UTC]

My theory is that the guy just grew jealous. He fought the same battles as Bryce, but the latter was seen as the great hero while Rendon was largely ignored because he was in his service. That, coupled with the fact that people just didn't like him because of his natural tendencies just served to continually make him more bitter as the years went on.

RanmaCMH In reply to Thejboy88 [2014-04-14 18:39:00 +0000 UTC]

Probably very true. That's my first inclination too!  The only thing that complicates the Howe grew bitter over time theory even a little is that little nugget Oghren drops (in Awakening) about him having his bedroom near the torture chamber.  To me, at least, there should be a difference between someone becoming jealous of his "friends" successes (which either way is still true!) and someone who actually delights in hurting people.  Maybe it's the mad jealousy of a natural sociopath.  Or maybe he's just very very addicted to the feeling of power.

Thejboy88 In reply to RanmaCMH [2014-04-14 18:45:16 +0000 UTC]

Or maybe he always had this terrible quality to him and just kept it hidden whenever Bryce was around. After all, from what we hear from Nathaniel, Rendon was an unpleasant person for at least as long as Nate was a small boy.

Oh wow you've really captured their expressions, they all look great! I've just started playing Origins again for the fourth time I think and I'm doing the Cousland story because it's my favourite. I always loved Arl Howe as a character and villain, reading into his backstory with Bryce just makes his betrayal all the sadder but then when you go back even further, the Couslands did hang his dad for his betrayal so it's just a sad case of history leading to vengeance. I definitely think you're right with him being Envy, it's obvious his family life isn't great and Bryce is a Teryn, one of only two, and I think Howe thinks he should be the Teryn by rights.

I think it's mentioned in an Codex entry, dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Codex… , it's inconsistent with Dragon Age: Awakening however as Nathaniel talks about a grandfather called Padric Howe who was a Warden, I think it's an error on the writers' part. If you also check out this link- dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Howe_… it goes into a bit more detail, but the Codex entry The Howes of Amaranthine is where Tarleton Howe is mentioned in the game.

Oh wow!  That makes it even more interesting.  Where do they talk about that?  Is that in game somewhere or in one of the books they wrote?  I love how in depth they got with this world, they really wanted to make a rich history for this game.  I should really do a little more research to inform my drawings.  If the info is online, I'd love to have the link.

Thank you for the compliment too.  Nobody is really drawing Howe, but I think that's a shame.  I mean, look at that nose!

I just started a new playthrough as a cousland (ok, let's be real I started like...five) and am I the only one who just really wishes you could get more interaction with Fergus? ESPECIALLY when you finally find him after the battle of Denerim?!?

Also I only just ran across this bit of dialogue today actually, for some reason I'd never bothered talking to Howe after the intro. I find it interesting that he seems very taken aback if you are super polite and kind to him. I mean from your perspective it seems perfectly reasonable to be nice to him, he is your fathers friend. I'm curious if being polite to him actually changes any of his later interactions.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RanmaCMH In reply to supernukunuku [2013-10-01 18:02:26 +0000 UTC]

I think the truth is that if we could have all the interaction we wanted with everyone, the game would never end. XD

I think the dialogue with Fergus at the end could be a little more fleshed out though.  Well, I think.  I've only done the Cousland playthrough once so I don't know his whole dialogue tree there.  I do want to find out more about what happened to him though, and a little more emotional reunion would have been nice. But I could go with him being something of a shell shocked veteran there, and just proud of his sibling and not wanting to distract from the moment.

And Howe doesn't seem to change his reaction at all based on your dialogue.  I think he's just taken aback for a moment, which I like.  He has this horrible plan and it's just harder to hold on to all the rationalizations when this family you're about to slaughter is so welcoming and warm.  But after he initiates it, all the old grudges and reasons would have to carry him through no matter what, I imagine.

What race do you intend to go for first in Inquisition? I'd love to see what you would do with a female qunari.

I figure even if you kind of know what's going to happen, this character is technically an ally of your father's as far as your character knows.  I wish I knew how well they knew each other at that point.  Howe and Bryce go pretty far back, and Howe's son (or daughter if you're male) is interested in you… so you must have seen each other a few times before.  I would love to have that story fleshed out a little.

Thank you for the compliment!  Especially on this one, I wasn't as happy with it as I have been with others but I'm glad you like it.

I don't knooow what I'm going to be in DA:I.  I'm so torn.  So many choices!!  The qunari is so intriguing though.  But I want to see if they fill in a little back story before I choose.  I'm so excited though.
