Description Concept behind this piece was to make a tree that would be the source of all unicorn magic (note: the stronger the connection with the tree the more powerful the unicorns magic).
Of course I will leave you with your imagination and see what comes to mind.
Inspiration for this came from tending to my bonsai tree and listening to Arise by E.S Posthumus
Song link: [link]

This was yet again a lot of first time's with this picture, previously to this had never drawn a tree like this,
I've changed a lot about my style through this so I hope these developments showed

I might put together a basic annotated timeline for how I did some of the aspects in this picture.
I have also added a grey scale version so you can see just how badly i failed at the value and definition between features.

If you have any input at all I'd appreciate it a lot, I value constructive criticism greatly as it helps me develop in the right directions.

Two words: Just - Wonderful. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h… " width="15" height="13" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="357" title="Heart"/>
Although, i think you should've still given it more distinctness, specially to the great tree in the centre, and the pony riding the balloon, which still looks so little and blurred in the corner...
But neverminding these things, i still find it very nice. The use of colors on the rocks bellow, the shading effect, the sunbeam, coming from the outsider atmosphere and into the closed environment.. Not to mention the touch of naturality.
It's a valuable piece of art, with an enjoyable taste of epicness, the exploration of the surroundings, regarding the deep, and wild, just as the purity of Nature...
Nice job! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/a/a… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="349" title="Aww"/>

Oh my, well, first critique, where to start.... First off, the lighting in this is beautiful, the textures you created are simply stunning, and the details really give it an all natural look. The shading style is quite impressive, though I do wish the balloon wasn't AS blurry, but it's still in a good view. I also would've liked to see just a splash of more color in the background, but seeing as it's set in a forest-type area, it's still breathtaking. This is a sight that would make anypony jealous, and I hope you will continue making these marvelous pieces!

I tend to collect truly brilliant pieces of artwork to post as my computers background pictures on a loop. I have four monitors set up for work, play, gaming and streaming and I collect a large amount of really good artwork.Β

I have just gone through and added EVERY single piece of art you've done and put it in that folder. All your art is truly inspiring, amazing and spectacular. Have an internet cookie.Β

Rexlvan is right... Congrats! Your headcanon is now canon. Still not sure which design for the tree of harmony/magic I like better, the canon design, or your spiral design. Both are awesome. Even after so much time, I still can't get over the atmosphere in this painting, very mysterious and intriguing.

Thank you very much! Yeah I can be a bit obsessive when it comes to details in some pieces, this one especially!Β

I'm glad you like it!

I think the idea alone is already pretty good, even though I could also think of it as being the heart of the Everfree Forest, that gives the woods its independence and unnaturalness.
In any case, it is also is really well executed.
Especially the tree itself looks wonderful and really realistic with all its details and the shading, making it a very atmospheric picture.

Despite that, I have to say, that I like the grayscale version even better,
because firstly, the lighting highlights the tree even more than in the colored version,
where the surrounding leaves' and the water's brightness distract a little bit from it.
and secondly, as other people have already pointed out, the few blurry edges are a little bit sharper in the other one.

In conclusion: It is very powerful art, that has a great mystical vibe about it, but the black-and-white version carries this tone even better.

Rain-Gear In reply to only-second-place [2013-11-04 21:57:19 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! The idea was really just a fleeting thought that came to me all of a sudden so I'm pretty surprised that it worked so well!

Yeah it's a strange trend I'm finding in my art that the greyscale version gets quite a few compliments. Maybe it's due to the fact I'm more comfortable

working in greyscale and then colouring it.

Thanks for the kind words and useful insight, I'll keep note of it!

Seems great. Soft and sharp in the right places. Excellent colors. The colored water coming from the tree looks a little like fabric, and the light rays on the right don't seem to be coming through the tree at a glance. Other than that, extremely intriguing (especially for fan fic lover here), incredible details drown out any problems. Keep making stuff like this and just fix the little kinks as you go.

Nice resonance between the tree and the design on the balloon!

hey i really like this, amazing work with those textures and the balloon; great color scheme as well

altho im still pretty horrendous at digital painting, i did notice your painting had this over-saturated look commonly seen in greyscale to color paintings; just try not to make every thing the same saturation [have the foreground slightly more saturated and the background less]

other than that this is awesome! keep up the good work!
