Description Concept behind this piece was to make a tree that would be the source of all unicorn magic (note: the stronger the connection with the tree the more powerful the unicorns magic).
Of course I will leave you with your imagination and see what comes to mind.
Inspiration for this came from tending to my bonsai tree and listening to Arise by E.S Posthumus
Song link: [link]

This was yet again a lot of first time's with this picture, previously to this had never drawn a tree like this,
I've changed a lot about my style through this so I hope these developments showed

I might put together a basic annotated timeline for how I did some of the aspects in this picture.
I have also added a grey scale version so you can see just how badly i failed at the value and definition between features.

Grey scale link: [link]

If you have any input at all I'd appreciate it a lot, I value constructive criticism greatly as it helps me develop in the right directions.

I really love art that expands the world of Equestria in some way like this. There's so much to the place we don't get to see from the show, and the theories people come up with in this fandom can be quite convincing.

I have to agree with you there, and a show such as this can really branch out so
there is nearly no limit to the type of idea you can dream up.

This makes me think of the art that was inspired by tales of King Arthur and Excalibur, or Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungs. The art is that gorgeous and the concept is very moving. I love the idea of Twilight traveling through a deep, mystical forest to find the source of a power she just barely understands. The setup you created for the Elements' shrine absolutely beautiful. Definitely reminiscent of The Sword in the Stone.

It's a little hard to truly enjoy, though. Failing to see Twilight's closest and most loyal companion with her on this adventure is upsetting, especially considering his long, undeserved history of neglect. That, and this image showed up in a completely Spikeless Drawfriend with fifty-six fcking images.

Thank you very much ! I'm glad you think it's gorgeous because I've been tuning this for hours and I finally decided to post it.

Well if it's any interest to you the was a concept i did of this image before this version that had spike in it but the composition
didn't really work out so I cut it short and started again.

Reminds me of the Sadidas from the Dofus/Wakfu series. If you don't know, they're a race of earth people who have this magic tree that's basically their essence of life. If the tree dies, they all die. Guess what the big bad wants. And in a twist, he actually succeeds. They all get better though, because time travel.

Rain-Gear In reply to mardique [2013-04-28 22:25:54 +0000 UTC]

Oh interesting, big magnificent trees always seem to have this image where
they are the origin to life or hold some form of power.
Oh well time travel is kind of cheating don't you think :L

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mardique In reply to Rain-Gear [2013-04-28 22:30:21 +0000 UTC]

Well the time travel was also the big bad's fault. Hoist by his own petard, really.

SeppyX In reply to ??? [2013-04-28 21:32:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh, one thing though, some of the swirls on the tree looks a bit out of place, especially the one in the middle of the first tree curve. Or perhaps it's just me.

You're probably right, this was my first time painting a tree and especially one with this magnitude and design.

I don't really have any critique as this is beyond awesome. Your use of colors and light is wonderful and the entire environment looks so highly detailed that I don't even know where to look at. I completely lack the words to describe this.
