Description Tremorworks project: Ravana

FINISHED! I AM FINISHED! Ravana is the final illustration for the Tremorworks/Demongate High project.

Ravana is a Hindu demon/god type fellow with ten heads and twenty arms, and quite a bad attitude. The story on this fellow is long and complicated, but my friend =avancna provided a nice, condensed version of one of Ravana's stories here:

"According to one legend, Ravana demanded boons from Siva, too.

"So, Ravana's mother was a devotee of Siva, and one day, Indra stole her lingam. In the hopes that Siva would provide her with another lingam, she prepared to perform austerities by undergoing a severe fast (ala a supermodel diet). Not wanting to see his mother suffer, Ravana offered to get her the Atmalingam from Siva himself.

"Then Ravana retired to a cave, built a great bonfire within it, and stood on his heads in the middle of the bonfire. Everyso often, he would cut off one head, and allow the fire to consume it, causing the bonfire to become even hotter. By the time he cut off his ninth head, Siva appeared and implored him to stop, lest Ravana consumed the whole world in flames. Ravana agreed to stop, provided Siva fulfilled his three demands, being that Siva provide him with the Atmalingam, a woman as beautiful as Parvarti, and immortality. Siva gave Ravana the Atmalingam, but warned him not to set it down until he gave it to his mother, as once set down, it could never be picked up again. Knowing of no other woman as beautiful as Parvarti, Siva reluctantly gave Ravana Parvarti to be his new wife. Then Siva granted Ravana immortality, on the condition that it could not be used to harm him, lest it be revoked.

"And so, Ravana set off to return to Lanka, with the Atmalingam on one shoulder, and Parvarti on the other. Indra came to Ravana, in disguise, and pointed at Parvarti, and screamed at Ravana, "Oh no! What is that hideous lump of ugliness on your shoulder!"
Ravana laughed and said that it was Parvarti, wife of Siva.

"But when he looked, in Parvarti's place was a hideous crone. And while Ravana reeled in shock, the crone jumped off his shoulder and ran away, cackling all the while.

"Dejected, Ravana continued on with the Atmalingam.

"A little later on his way, he was met by Ganesha, also in disguise. Ganesha suggested that, since Siva didn't provide him with Parvarti, perhaps he didn't provide him with immortality, either. In a rage of agreement, Ravana tore up a mountain, and hurled it at Siva's abode, causing much injury and property devaluation. And in retaliation, Siva revoked Ravana's immortality.

"Doubly rejected, he continued on with the Atmalingam.

"Apparently, Ravana was suddenly consumed with an urge to pee something fierce. Remembering Ravana's warning about setting the Atmalingam down, he met Ganesha again, though, this time, he was disguised as a cowherd. Ravana asked Ganesha to hold the Atmalingam, and that he would be back within an hour. But, Ravana did not return until well after the hour was up, and when he finally got back, he saw to his horror, that Ganesha had set it down on the ground, and was now sinking into the earth.

"Frantically, he tried to pick it up, but, it turned into a giant cow, and continued to sink, until only its ears stuck out, which can be supposedly seen to this very day."

LOL - That's cool! It's good to know that I've evolved beyond the styles that taught me how to draw and that my stuff can be recognized in its own right. Thank you!

There're lots of different stories, and he may have been quoting partly from Wikipedia and partly from memory. Alas; this was more than four years ago and I just don't remember.

LOL - Thanks very much. He was pretty challenging to do - coordinating twenty weapon-weilding limbs took me most of an afternoon.

well..it was an afternnon well spent lol.

Do you ever plan on doing any other characters from the Ramayana?

It will depend on where my assignments take me. This guy was done specifically for Tremorworks. If more come up, or if I end up digging around for more ideas once I get my mountain of queued projects complete, I could very easily get back into my world mythology illustrations.

I liked this "pile of heads" configuration better than the "row of heads" that I saw on most of the images online. I think I saw a statue of this guy or a similar multi-headed figure at the Nelson-Atkins museum in Kansas City some years ago, and that image stuck with me.

Glad you like it!

Was this multiple-headed statute of the Tibetan deity, "Yamatanka"?

I honestly don't remember - it was definitely not as Hindu-looking as some of the other pieces in their collection, so it's possible. I just don't remember what the placard said.

I probably just need to visit the museum more often. They don't allow cameras inside.

The pure feel of captured motion in this is fantastic. All the heads looking in different directions with different expressions is brilliant, and very creepy in a way. Looks very graceful and flowing for all the huge amount of limbs. Well done, and as always a brilliant job. I'll be sad to see demongate go *sniffs*
