Heh, he looks a lot more in proportion now! I love the dramatic sword wielding pose.

Thank you very much. I wanted him to look beautiful and dangerous at the same time. I don't think of angels as little naked babies with fluffy wings...

Angels were never there to be pretty and shiney. Most of them had unfthomable tasks. Flaming swords, strange habits. I always thought it strange that the concept was feminized and then made child-like... some screwy notion of purety that has been popularized I suppose.

I blame the Victorians.
Actually, I'd have to go a-hunting through the histories to find out what really happened. If you look at any of the older writings on the subject of angelic beings, they read a lot more like demons than they do the pretty guardians that so many current depictions support. I would suppose that the "pretty" angel started appearing as early as the pre-Renaissance, where they have all these yards and yards of draped fabric to wear, and ornate, gilded wings. The definitions of purity and beauty, ever in flux anyway, seemed to start giving way to the prettyfied angels around that point.
Granted, the orginal depictions of the Greek Nike were awfully pretty, too.
And then again, again, what patron is going to support the 16th Century artist who wants to draw cherubim as balls of wings, eyes and fire?
Personally, I'm glad our modern culture allows us to dig around and find many different interpretations of the angelic so that we fantasy artist types can do both the prettyfied versions and the monstrous versions in one sweep of the brush - er, so to speak.

Actually there were some funky angels in pre-renaissance art... I saw some in Europe... I wish I could direct you to who painted them...
Well, the greeks liked their myths to have an element of glamour to them.
Oh, yes. Between archaeology, a long recorded history and the fact that artists are not dependant upon the government or the church for funds makes this a good time all the way round for fantasy artists. (oh... and the internet...)
