Description This was created for the winter themed contest.

Kurokami is a traditional Gion Kouta dance/song performed by geisha. I chose to illustrate it for this contest. Here is an english translation of the song:

Kurokami - Black Hair

It is the pillow
We shared that night,
When I let down
My jet-black hair.
That is the cause of my lament
When I sleep alone
With my single robe
To cover me.
'You are mine,' he said,
Not knowing the heart
Of a simple girl.
The voice of a temple bell,
Sounds into the quiet night.
Awakening from an empty dream
In the morning,
How lovely, sweet,
And helpless is my longing.
Before I know it The silver snow has piled up.

In Japanese culture, it is very important to dress according to the seasons, so I found this contest very fitting. I decided to use the image of an oiran because her multi-layered kimono would be very suitable for winter. She's wearing snow covered bamboo on her obi which is a common winter motif. Her deep purple uchikake is patterned in a snowy landscape around the hem and snowflakes around the shoulders. In Japan deep purple is said to be a colour that expresses the cold, so it's common for winter kimono. Her hair is also decorated in plum blossoms which bloom in mid winter.

Very nice detail! Her expression matches the scenery around her perfectly!

Plum blossoms bloom in mid to late February in Japan because they're located in horticultural zones 7-10, which is equivalent to around Florida and Hawaii. Plum blossoms signal the coming of spring and such are the inspiration for Baikasai, the annual "bean throwing" custom in February to herald in a new spring. "Kurokami" itself is a special dance that is only done by Maiko in the last month of training during the "erikae" stage.
