Description Archie's a GOOD boy, yes he is, oh yes he is-!!

HowlechoHowlecho.deviantart.com's little Border Collie pup, all grown up now but still a good boy, I'm sure. What a total cupcake.

Merry Christmas Howlecho.

wow this is my favourite, he captured the vulnerability of the puppy very well, and nice use of values, I also like how u included the grass underneath to add another layer of values.

Out of curiousity and you dont have to answer this or u could send me the answer if u dont want to answer it but is there enough money in drawing animal portraits to make a living? Any artists I have heard talk of it say it pays too little

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pyrrhite In reply to subedei [2010-04-11 19:47:03 +0000 UTC]

Indeed it does pay too little, certainly for someone like me who takes forever on a drawing, I work for $1-$2 an hour sometimes, and never yet more than $5 an hour. I have read that for an artist the real money is in oil paintings. I have seen a few very high end pet portraitists who get a few hundred dollars or more for a picture, and are able to make good livings, but that's not me.
But somebody who can finish up a nice portrait in a few hours, maybe it would pay pretty well. I once figured it out that I couldn't make more than $10,000 a year at my present pace.

Thanks again, I'm glad you like Archie. I liked the high contrast black and white thing he has going on.

Ouch that is painful, well suppose you get faster with time, once you have a system figured out, you might turn a profit, suppose once you get a reputation going you might pull in more, did you ever try and email one of these high paid people and ask how they do it? Just an idea, in my opinion you should be gettin paid way more than that, your skill level it must have taken a long time to get there, always saddens me to see how little respect artists are paid for their work.

pyrrhite In reply to subedei [2010-04-12 12:48:59 +0000 UTC]

I think the high end folks make money because they are good enough, they can ask $400 for a drawing, I think it's that simple. Nowadays exposure is easy enough to get. Marketing is no doubt important, awards and shows look good on a resume too.
I've looked around on line at different animal portraitists. Honestly the quality is wide ranging as you might expect, but the top artists are so skilled it doesn't surprise me they can ask what they do. I have some ways to go.
I mentioned a long lay-off and I've only been back at drawing a little less than a year. I'm still in training, and hope that experience will make me faster as well as better.
Thanks for your support and kind words btw!

Your more than welcome, well I am sure you will get there, think alot of people expect to pay artists little as artists enjoy what they do, which is unfair as they certainly wouldnt do their own job for as little, but hey thats life, I suppose u build to a place where you can ask for more.

Yes, that's how I see it, if one isn't in commercial art anyway, you have to earn your stripes so to speak, and if it doesn't ever happen, well, it doesn't.

subedei In reply to pyrrhite [2010-04-12 22:07:12 +0000 UTC]

Well thats fair enough if your just doing this as a sideline really.

pyrrhite In reply to subedei [2010-04-12 23:55:00 +0000 UTC]

I guess it's a sideline. It's how I think of myself, as a pet portraitist, but certainly doesn't pay the bills. I imagine your experience will be quite different.

Yes, possibly or perhaps even probably...I'm in the process of setting up a website. Having my teenage son do it---never sell your relatives a car or a horse, lend them money or have them set up a website for you.

subedei In reply to pyrrhite [2010-04-14 19:03:03 +0000 UTC]

lol no truer word said, my father used to be a manager in Dell and always used to say, never hire family, never have them work for you, as a problem in work can then be a problem outside.

Setting up a website would be good, best way of promoting yourself, im sure your business will pick up, you might think of setting up a blog too, if you do let us know your url

subedei In reply to pyrrhite [2010-04-15 01:24:45 +0000 UTC]

A blog, you can set up one for free and very easily with blogspot, I keep two myself, one for 3d, one for drawing, I just upload work to mine when I do it, like Deviantart, except its done in posts, its nice, I put up work there that I wouldnt put here, like sketches and there is a different audience that uses it too, well some of the same, some different

pyrrhite In reply to subedei [2010-04-15 12:18:25 +0000 UTC]

I looked over your blogs, they're lovely and it's nice how you can set up your own design and mood for them. It looks like a bit of work to keep on top of them, and you have to make an effort to be interesting and engaging, no?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

subedei In reply to pyrrhite [2010-04-15 14:55:21 +0000 UTC]

Well you can adapt the design as much as you like, I just used pre existing looks, some people design their own banners and artwork for it. I have to say I dont find them much hassle to keep up on, I just put up work there when I have it done and thats it, I write a bit if I feel like it, if not I just post the work.

pyrrhite In reply to subedei [2010-04-15 23:33:21 +0000 UTC]

I don't know, I had never considered it. I suppose it has the advantage of being interactive more than a website designed to garner commissions.

Well I have heard of late that art directors read them too now as a way of finding out what kind of person you are, I suppose everything we do on the internet can be watched by someone, kind of a scary thought

Hah! It is a scary thought on one hand but if somebody wants to slog through acres of my silly comments on the two or three forums I frequent, or see what sort of pet or art supplies I've ordered on line recently, well, they can have at it!

For a while I hankered after a Smooth Collie, they are so elegant. I used to hanker after quite a few different kinds of dogs in fact, but I've gone over to the Chesapeake side and unless some fetching little stray makes itself irresistible at my door, that's where I'll stay.

I've never craved a Smooth Collie, but I do like the look of the Boxer, the Great Dane, and some other muscular short haired dog that I can't think of right now....mostly I like dogs with lots of hair

Acck, I spent a year dog-grooming and several more years owning an Irish Setter. I have grown to treasure short-coated dogs. But I can't deny a collie in full and tidy coat is a beautiful thing.
