Description WIP of the Late Triassic phytosaur Brachysuchus from the Dockum Group of Texas. I was interested in reconstructing a phytosaur and came across this genus which I had never heard of (and for which there appears to be little to no paleoart of). It's the sister taxon to the more popular Angistorhinus, but differs from it and other phytosaurs in having a skull that is much shorter, broader and deeper. Primarily referencing this photo  of the holotype specimen as well as Scott Hartman's Paleorhinus skeletal

Looks very interesting, I like how you go after the quite underrated species

Thanks! I try to, if I can find enough information on them.

Looks nice, but might be going a little overboard with the crocodilian convergence...

In what way?

Mainly the keratinised face and croc-identical tail.

Oh lol I haven't gotten to the face and the tail...if you mean the scutes on top, that's going on fossil evidence. As for the other scales on the tail, banded scales in distinctive rings like that are more common than not in reptiles. Not just crocodilians, but things like anoles, iguanas, Komodo dragons, etc. With that being said, I'm probably going to significantly change the overall look before I'm done.

It's going to be awesome! But I think you missed a detail. Uniquely among archosauriforms, in phytosaurs a complex structure called the "gular shield" was formed by multiple, irregular osteoderms overlapping and interlocking under the throat (Nesbitt 2011).
