Description Working on a reconstruction of the Permian synapsid Cotylorhynchus, the most well-known member of the highly unusual Caseasauria. These animals had big, wide bodies, massive forelimbs adapted for digging (and perhaps burrowing), and, famously, a comically small head. Caseids are one of the best examples of morphological extremes achieved by animal lineages during the Permian and Triassic, and I find them to be kind of like the anatomical opposite of erythrosuchids. In my reconstruction, I'm giving Cotylorhynchus big, fleshy nostrils (the skull has huge nostril openings) and cornified pads all over the skin. The skull texture is reminiscent (to me, a layperson with very limited knowledge of osteological correlates for integument) of animals that have similar structures, so I decided to give it these toughened patches all over the skin. I figured this could help it in a fossorial lifestyle, as modern burrowers like armadillos and mastigures have similar "armored" skin.Β

Oh I thought you made the lineart in pc and then you scanned to retouch it! Im thinking to move to full digital. Which brush in PS you use for lineart like in this pic?

Β This big fellow already looks wonderful and I look forward to seeing your realisation of this evolutionary peculiarity - honesty, I've rather fallen in love with the oddities of this Geological Era for their truly shameless embrace of the odd (in terms of proportions & structure).

This is one of those animals you just have to look at and go "...But why?"

Beautiful work so far, though! I love how you add detail.

Even when reconstructed in a naturalistic manner, they are still so freaking weird! Loving it so far! I am even more looking forward to your choice of colour scheme.

What's your opinion on it being aquatic?

I don't know enough about its habitat, but I don't think a digging/fossorial lifestyle and a semi-aquatic one are mutually exclusive. Some turtles burrow underwater, and a ton of animals at the very least dig underwater to find food- as far as I can tell it's possible it did both. With this reconstruction though I'm going with "terrestrial digger" for the overall look.
