Description After Alex (Alex ) and Ahktar (Ahktar - concept of modern chopping blade ) this is 3th concept of modern sword over traditional shape in this style. This time I remade probably most popular sword - katana from Japanese. All work is mine. Work has been made in 3ds max + vray as rendering engine. Completed in Photoshop.  Picture is bigger to see details.

So what do you think. Do you like it or not? tnx for comments if any. bye.

I also did:

Katana - Yuki
Spear - Valkyrie
Knife - Anansi - concept of modern knife
Knife 2 - Awha

Blade of beauty and well-formed properties, this one would do both a wonderful in-game\movie concept and an actual weapon.

Though, in case of actual weapon, this one could benefit from few possible small tweaks.

- Such hilt, even being good in design itself, could render one's hands tired and even scratched, if being held for long and if one's hands get enough tension. It is the same as difference between holding a smooth sphere and a firm cube in one's grasp.

- The part at the base of the blade - it is fine if it is a separate piece (the darker one), but if it is a part of solid structure - it makes the blade more fragile. It is fine when such part matches direction of the blade fully - but may weaken it if it's joints are under different angle.

- The "apple" - end of the hilt itself - is also used for proper grip. At least, in case of katana - once places one hand at the base of the guard, palm of other hands goes to the "apple" first and wraps around the base of the hilt after. Plus, "apple" is also used to hold what is called "shank" (might have different name in English though) - to prevent hilt material from detaching in case of great pressure and tension. Such construction as this one may render it fragile.

- Most blades use small channels for blood streams. Katana lacks such channels, always cleaned up with special firm move right before returning to sheath. This blade in particular has several joints, channels and even holes (if htose are not textures, of course), that will gather liquids and blood inside, that will be extremely unpleasant to clean later.

These are not critical, if this model is used for media - but one should remember, that there will always be those, who -will- shout that "author is idiot, not knowing such "obvious" (as if everyone knows and cares about these...) details" - so, some of such moments might prove to be good to notice along professional way.

Hi. I know about that grip. I used to make it in different way but I realize than nothing can be better and more comfortable then standart leather rounded around. It is evolved through centuries and it is imposible to invent better solution I think. I just try to avoid repetition so time by time  a give a call for something unusual. I do concepts for PC game so incompatibility with real world doesnt give me big headache

bye.

It's brilliant because it combines the classic elements of a katana with modern revisited design.
While everything about the art is surely splendid, I make a mako about the detail that I can't really fit into the rating (hence the rating is *5).
You put smalls nails or screws to affix the piece of metal to the back of the blade, while it surely looks cool, it's technically a great flaw given the fact tht the holes will greatly affect the integrity of the steel while swinging the sword and hitting things with it.
One could argue of course that this is a future and fictional design so I won't ponder on with this.
A great plus is the grip of the sword which I can't help but it keeps reminding me of the new Necrons from Warhammer 40k tabletop for some odd reason.

Hi and tnx. those screws dont have to go through blade. I know one mechanisim that dont go through but go around and tighten it as you turning screw. and this kind of grip has always disadvantage against standart one. I thing rounded leather is the best surface for hands ever.

First off: I love Katanas and Wakizashi, so this is going to be slightly biased.
I actually like the somewhat basic design more than if you'd gone crazy with it and added fancy bits all over the place like some people do. Kudo's earned there.
I do like the hilt design, although I think it could become difficult to hold in battle, at least if your palms get sweaty like mine do. This can be ignored if you wear leather gloves though, so it doesn't really matter.
I like the decorative piece on the blade, and the design of the crossguard. Both pieces have beauty and function, and it all melds together rather well.
I only give four out of five on originality because while I do love the design, it is still a fairly basic Katana.

Hi. tnx. I prefer minimalism in general. therefore I admire katana swords as well. I do not much about real one swords, just admire style and profile of this kind of swords. I know about that grip. everytime I try do something else then classic grip sword experienced people pointed out that it will be uncomfortable. I know it is true. just trying to do something else in this part of swords.

I think the grips are awesome, don't get me wrong.  I actually like the ideas you come up with far more than a plain grip.
...But I'm not the greatest with a sword so I'd probably slip and kill myself XD

Hmm... No shinogi or kissaki, not sure I'd call this a katana or a messer with a katana's tsuba. Also if the flats aren't angled then that edge would be pretty fat, which is okay for a katana I guess since battlefield katana had a niku (though that's not really necessary with decent steel). Finally the handle looks... Well, hard to say. It looks like it would be uncomfortable though. I still think you did an amazing job on it though.

Side-Note: I'm a bit uncomfortable with the snake (at least I think that's what the emblem is), don't see a lot of snakes as displays in Japan. Personal thing though, so not really related.

hi mate. You look like sword experienced. I am not. I have some basic info fprom youtube and google. thats all. so I will always make some mistake in desings. At leat I dont do those big mistake in the past... And that snake: I do it randomly. When I found on net some good tribal I use it. (by good I mean those tribals which Have good resolution and are free to use.)

There was another katana design you did, I don't remember if I commented on it or not, but you did a really nice job on its design. It was a more traditional looking blade if memory serves, didn't have a kissaki but that's actually not unheard of. And yea, I've been into swords for a while now and the katana is/was always my favorite - even long after knowing the mysticism behind it is just fabrication - so I've endeavored to learn as much about them as I can.

Also, I want to make sure you know I'm not telling you these things to criticize you just for the sake of criticizing you, but rather to help you improve upon future works. You do a really good job with these and they're very impressive, far better than I could ever hope to do.

Hi. tnx mate. And dont be affraid to be critic about my work. I allways take it in positive way as it improves me. I like when sobedy with skills point out errors in my work. I dont know a lot about sword but when I started doing sword at the begining I was even worse about it. When people put some experieneces comments I always learn something new.

The one thing that I see it those protrusions on the handle could be potentially painful as they could dig into your hand during combat.
Other than that, Looks Great!

Yea. corners on those look too sharps. Originally they should be ok but I used specific rendering setting when edges are sharpened and in this result it is sharpened just too much.
