Description Dang... I drew this on January eighteenth, but I have no scanner! So, I'm using Grandpa's scanner once again. The family is over here preparing for the whole "Superbowl Sunday" thing... The biggest bore I know!

Anyway, it's a Cat Mer! I did him with Prismacolor pencils over the course of three days. One day to sketch and pen, and two to color. I'm pretty happy with him, but the mouth is bothering me... It doesn't line up with the cheekbones. Oh, well!

I am so envyous of all your art...you use such beautiful colors in coordination...any tips you could give me?

Peachfuzz In reply to Krensada [2005-08-15 04:36:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! That's a mighty nice thing to say!

...Tips? I never thought about that sort of thing... Hmmm... Basically, to see if things work, I try to imagine parts of my drawings as certain colors before I color them. Imagination is what creates the creatures, and imagination is what will help coordinate colors! Close your eyes and imagine the finished image in different color schemes. Mentally color in, say, the character's dress with the entire spectrum before you choose. And if you flub up, go with it! I have screwed up ROYALLY on occasion, and when I do, I just try my best to make the rest of the drawing fit with it. If something sticks out too much, I'll add that color in somewhere else in the drawing to mellow it out.

Uh... Just stuff like that. Listen to me go on! Thanks again!

This is really good. I like everything about it. True as you state in the description that the cheekbones don't match up, but it doesn't matter.
I think it actually ives it more personality this way. The shading and perspective are nicely done and creativity it took to come up with something like this means only one thing. a definite

Pretty nice. The colors in this came out great. I don't know why but the tial is my favourite part. Well, pretty much everyone and yourself said it, the mouth seems a little odd. But, honestly its a very minor distraction from a other wise nice, cute, and colorful piece

Now that's very original! A marine tiger, I love the idea
For underwater pics, try a blue tint to suggest water surrounding the objects/characters. To be honest, until I looked prcisely, I thought he was flying through the forest.

I didn't want to use any blue... I don't LIKE blue. I know I suck at water (character/background interaction is an issue I'm still fighting with), but this was supposed to be a murky pond sort of setting. I definitely need to practice with water!

Thanks for the comment! You've given me a lot to think about.

Another one thats full of imagination. You managed to keep it looking playful like a kitten yet fantasy because of what it is. Vert nice color tones, may i ask how you blend them so smoothly?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Peachfuzz In reply to Cracked-Ice-Concepts [2005-07-01 20:26:38 +0000 UTC]

Thaaaaaaaaaaank youuuuuuuuu! Sorry to fill up your pencil forum with so much color, but colored pencils ARE still pencils, afterall.

How do I blend them so smoothly? Mostly, I have the soft lead of my Prismacolor pencils to thank. But, I help them along by drawing from darkest to lightest, making gradients with a darker color to help it blend with the lighter color I will use next. It's just like shading with a regular pencil, except I put another color on top. So in the end, I get bright, smooth color that completely saturates the paper but still blends nicely.

Hey no problem, i enjoyed them.

I have a 250 set of prisma color, but i just cant get them to blend...well blue is my problem. I found green is easy to use, red is okay, but damn is blue a bitch, it gets all choppy and shit. But i usually work out dark to light as you said, im not too good with them. I just wasnt sure if you used a colorless blender.

Peachfuzz In reply to Cracked-Ice-Concepts [2005-07-01 20:45:13 +0000 UTC]

I only have a 120 set of Prisma pencils. I didn't think that there were anywhere near 250 colors in the Prisma line! So, I don't even have a colorless blender for the pencils. I have one for the markers, but I haven't really found a purpose for it yet. So, no colorless blender.

I agree, blue sucketh. I don't know what it is with Prisma products... I've never had such overwhelming problems with blue before I used them! I tell ya, it isn't any better with the markers. My cheapo Crayolas are much better as far as blues go. It's like... None of the Prisma blues like each other! They feel like they're all different in softness, hue, and opacity, so they don't work in harmony.

Cracked-Ice-Concepts In reply to Peachfuzz [2005-07-01 20:49:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, i went all out, it cost like 200 bucks for them all.

I have yet to get any use out of them lol. But blue is a bitch, and i sgree, they seem like they just dont want to agree. They get all choppy, white spots everywhere, i dont know what is use with them.

Peachfuzz In reply to Cracked-Ice-Concepts [2005-07-01 20:55:55 +0000 UTC]

I've never been particularly fond of blue, so the Prisma line doesn't depress me. I seem to use greens and browns the most. They're the shortest in my pencil set, and the dryest in my marker set. I've been trying to earn money to replace my poor two-inch-long greens and browns. They're almost too short to sharpen!

Oh, my 120 Prisma pencils cost $120, ironically, but my 144 Prisma markers were $240. I don't use the markers much these days because my current drawing book doesn't have the right paper. I'm actually a marker artist, whose pencils collected dust for years. I was forced to use pencils just last December, and I find that I'm actually BETTER with them than with markers.

wow.... lovely kitten *stays away from the claws*
the prismacolor pencils are always usefull...
the transparency turned out really nice, and the tones in the cat (the scales?) are warm and beautifull together, the perspective is just fav... (i can't draw right a perspective like that )
i love the design, you are very creative
just the background is a little weird for the kitten tones, and it can be plain on some places, some shadows coul help it, besides that an amazing drawing

excellent job, i really love the color variation between the critter and the background, the dark greens really make him pop out at 'cha ^_^
wish my pathetic stabs at making decent backgrounds turned out as well...x_x
anyway, i really like this....and it deserves a ! ^_~

Wow! Thanks a ton for the fav! That makes me happy.

Go ahead and do a cat mer if you like! I'm sure I didn't invent them, so as long as you don't steal my particular color scheme or anatomy, it's fine. Or, if you do draw my unique Cat Mer design, you have to do your own pose, give me credit, and link to the original. I support art, but not art theft, you know? At any rate, if you draw a cat mer, I want to see it! Drop me a note and I'd be happy to look.

What a wonderful character design!!! The fins are great but the tail...oh, you did SUCH a lovely job with that wonderful tail!! That curve at the back is beautifully done. Also, excellent work with the transparency!! Gorgeous stuff. You already mentioned the mouth a little off, but the rest is great! It requires so much patience to layer color pencil: I'm in envy. Very nice design and composition!
