Description It seems somebody's family has a good bit of money.

I realized while coloring that her neck must be mighty flexible to strike this pose. Or broken. Whoops. I'm also still fighting with directionality of the eyes when facing in a downward direction. This is my best attempt so far but they're not as focused as I'd like.

Once again, I'm working to distinguish my characters physically. I wouldn't call Cleo "fat" but she does carry extra weight, mostly around the hips and rear. Cleo is all about the curves. As you can see, she has small ears compared to the others and a fuller face. I'm not entirely pleased with her tail but it's my best depiction of it yet. I want it a bit more plumy and full than that.

This scanned decently everywhere except her orange fur. It came out more reddish than it is in person, which I wouldn't mind except that nearly all of the shading was lost. I know her orange fur looks so flat here but I assure you all that the scanner is the one to blame. XD Feel free to critique anything but the shading on her orange fur. I especially need help drawing urban scenes like this. I'm awful with them! My decorative stone wall looks like a lava lamp!

She's a cat! She can turn her head back as far as she likes D:

I guess what might help this "urban scene" is the angle of the wall to the angle of the door... definitely a case of awkward perspective. I think it's two point perspective (I'm not the best at it, but ) Anyway, the most I can say is to get some reference pictures. Those always help me the most.

I know this is off-topic, but the door handle made me think of a cigar D:

Anyway, this definitely has a story to it... which is my favorite kind of picture. It looks like someone has been up to no good I think she's so cute... I'm glad to see you working on different body frames to make your girls all different. A noble scheme!

Thanks for the pointers, Starrie. I definitely need 'em when it comes to urban things. I'm definitely better at bushes and trees.

So, where's YOUR cigar door handle?

That's a really tough pose to do and I think you did an excellent job of it. I didn't think that Cleo broke her neck or anything. Maybe she's just part owl... kidding. I wish I lived in that house!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

WarpedOrbit [2007-10-18 16:41:56 +0000 UTC]

The pose could be remedied simply by rotating the shoulders a tad...though some animals do have necks much more flexible than ours (makes me want to draw an anthro owl looking back ) The only other thing I can think of is that I don't believe a tail-ring would stay in place. A smooth ring won't even stay on human hair, a tail is a slippery critter. But anyway, I think the door handle is perfect. The angle of the wood slats is unusual but not unattractive, though I think the drama of them needs to be broken by a nice big brass knocker or a small fancy or round shaped window just behind and above her head. The only thing with the rock wall is that the grout between the stones may be too wide and the stones themselves could show more variation in size, shape and even slightly in color. Also the line of the steps in that right corner is the wrong angle for that view. Other than that it's a very nice piece, the composition is good (and thats not easy with close-up architectural stuff) and the rendering and textures are pleasing. I won't talk about the color

That tiara-thing wouldn't stay on, either. But I think this is one of those times when I'll throw logistics by the way-side for aesthetics. I just wish I'd drawn her tail fur more plumy around the cuff so it'd look a little less like it's going to fall right off.

Thanks so much for the helpful input. Always appreciated!

Better than I used to do with Cleo, putting the tail cuff on there like the fur was a solid blob.

I don'tknow about that, cats are very flexible animals, but then again, it's your own opinion, I just find nothing really wrong.

I like the grain you put on the doors, it makesc it look more like wood, and the shiney parts look metallic as well. I would want to see the rock look a little more like rock though, at least the mortar.

Other than that, it looks pretty cool.

Though the rocks in the wall seem okay, it's the mortar that I noticed.

Cat... her turning her head that far is a feline gesture. I didn't find it disturbing. Very limber people may manage it too.

A fluffier tail could be possible, widen it and distinguish with more of the kind of spiky fur-texture bits you've got where her tail fur goes over the bauble. Also if the bauble went in farther and the floof tail were wider for a more dramatic look that'd help make it look fluffier. As it is, her tail itself would be rather narrow under all the fur, this is true of all cat tails. Look at the tail on a Sphinx sometime.

Peachfuzz In reply to robertsloan2 [2007-10-01 02:25:37 +0000 UTC]

This is the first time I've drawn the cuff sinking into the fur rather than floating around it. It was a last-minute thought I did while inking, without a sketch. I'm definitely going to make it sinking in more next time.

Thanks for the input, my friend.

robertsloan2 In reply to Peachfuzz [2007-10-01 02:29:06 +0000 UTC]

That'll make the tail look fluffier. Also make the tail wider to get it more plumy, with some of those little spiky fur clumps coming off the sides and tip too.

Beautiful picture! The colors are pretty, and Cleos pose are pretty good, the neck don't look too strange, but it would maybe look better if she standed just a little bit more in sidewiev than se does now... But the other things are great, the doorknob is beautfully designed, and the texture and shading of the door is just so god-damned awesome... And the flowerpot is really petty and adds some more interest and detail in the picture, really great but you may want to make the space between the rocks in the wall a bit smaller the next time you draw those kind of walls, and maybe use a brighter color for it...

Peachfuzz In reply to OkapiLover [2007-09-27 19:48:24 +0000 UTC]

You're the second person to suggest that I use less space between the rocks next time. I'm definitely going to do that.

Love the woodgrain on the door and the patterning on the carpet under her feet. Looks like a well-used entrance. What I really like is the way you've got the metallics shaded. That's pretty cool, and with a bit more highlighting as well as darker shading I bet you'd have an even better look. Still, it does give the impression of metals. The little details of the door handle are also very well done! That discreet potted plant in the lower left is a wonderful touch, breaking up the stone wall a bit. Above her, the door and wall seem very bare. Not sure what might work with this. Perhaps a hanging potted plant with a fancy macramΓ© holding the pot? Some vines climbing over the wall (not as likely unless the house's owners liked the look of that). Like the girl's pelt pattern, and I'm sorry the colors aren't what you made them so I can see exactly what you've done.

Hmm... well for the decorative stone wall, the mortar between them would likely be less; more rock, less "glue" holding them together I'm thinking. That would be reasonable. Not sure if the scan took the shading from them, but they don't seem to stick out of the wall much, either. Are they rather flat where they come out, perhaps? If they were rounded, there would be a bit more shadows on the lower edges, if not highlights. Again, this might be on the original, but didn't survive the scanning process.

That thin, very pale line on the wall separating it from the door... stands out a lot, but isn't making much sense. Why does it stand out so much? Following it down, it appears to be part of the door frame, but that makes the door seem oddly inset. Not sure on that.

Hopefully some of that will help. You're a lot better at doing backgrounds than I am. (smiles)

Peachfuzz In reply to Catgoyle [2007-09-26 23:07:26 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much for the detailed input! Much appreciated! I'm terrible with metallic things and kinda threw colors on there at a guess, so I could definitely stand to improve.

Good point about the mortar-to-rock ratio. I knew it looked wrong somehow, and I do believe you've hit the nail on the head. I'm not sure that I had any dimension at all in mind for the rocks. I drew blobs and colored blobs. So no wonder they're not looking that hot. So far I've had people suggest that I add cracks and imperfections as well as variations in color, and your suggestion to add more dimension is excellent advice, too. Hopefully next time I try a stone wall like this, it won't look so bad!

If the door looks inset to you because of the strange door frame, then I succeeded. But if it looks bad, then I've still got work to do. I modelled this door after the front door at my father's house, it has a thin metal side frame with a thicker bottom like that, with an inner wooden doorframe angling inward. But that's a flimsy trailer-home door, not exactly what I was going for in this drawing.

Like I said, thanks a ton for the tips. That helps a lot.

Catgoyle In reply to Peachfuzz [2007-09-27 18:21:47 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome!

The strip of metal in the door wouldn't have looked so odd on a modern house, but on this one it looked so out of place that I simply could not figure out what it was.

As for the detailed input... If you hadn't asked for it in the desc, I wouldn't have given it. My work is far from perfect, and I don't want people picking it apart just because they can. (shrugs) If someone =asks= for help, I take them at their word. (smiles)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Peachfuzz In reply to Catgoyle [2007-09-27 19:54:00 +0000 UTC]

My dad's door doesn't weigh a fraction of what this thing would weigh. That metal thing would so break, now that I think about it. That definitely wasn't a good move on my part.

Unless I mark the piece "Critique Discouraged" (I usually only do this for non-serious art and in cases of extreme scanner-rape) or specifically ask in the description that people not pick at a certain thing (like Cleo's orange fur here due to scanner issues), then feel free to point out anything that looks weird or could be better. I don't have the ability to see problems in my art as well as you guys do. And every artist can stand to improve, no matter how good they may be.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Catgoyle In reply to Peachfuzz [2007-09-27 22:30:32 +0000 UTC]

Now that metal wouldn't break if it were good steel that thick only holding up wood. (smiles) Chances aren't good that it would be, that wasn't the question.

And anytime you mention that this or that was messed up by the scan, I certainly don't pick on it. (smiles) That would be quite rude. And you're right; even the best of artists has room to grow and improve. Even if I can't see where... (grins)

really nice soft textures....it 'feels' almost touchable! I like that your experimenting with positions, etc...its always a good thing to practice! I really like how you're distinguishing everyone of your characters.I'd say though that right now, I don't think her pudge would sit as much on the top of her hips as much as around her hips...at the moment it looks a bit like she has two big ol love handles and no buns! So I'd say lower the circular shape of her chub a bit so that it appears to fall right were her buns would end, ya know? Or, you could keep the lovely big ol hips, but smooth out where the hips end and the legs begin...Her leg and her hip just seem a bit too seperated there! anyways, hope that might help a bit

Just like my scanner. Only my scanner would have made it worse. ...Darn, I forgot to check what model my scanner was...

ANYWAY, I love the shading on this! And because I'm so used to oranges being wrecked by scanners, I can picture Cleo a lighter orange with normal shading. xD Cleo's cute, by the way; her neck is a little odd, but nothing too bad. In fact, I probably wouldn't have noticed if you didn't point it out.

If you want help with the stone wall, I say that next time don't make all the stones the same color. Maybe some darker stones, some lighter stones, a brown stone or two... yeah.

Looks really nice Peachfuzz. You convincingly made her curvy, and I agree with a commenter above who said that the door texture rocks! It's so detailed, but it doesn't detract from Cleo in the slightest.
Maybe a shadow from the vase thrown onto the wall would improve the realism there a bit. The rocks/ stones are very smooth. Perhaps some imperfections would help?
Overall the shading is really really good and I really like the tail cuff detail! Very creative. The neck looks fine to me.
