Description Bunches of things went wrong here. T__T For one, I tried a new outfit, which I hate. I kinda like the skirt, but the mini-poncho thing is lame. I also dislike her facial expression and I accidentally penned her face incorrectly, lopping off her cheek. Then, I tried a different light situation than usual, at night, with a light source from the glowing staff. It even scanned badly. (No surprise there, though.)

The worst of all, though, was this new bristol. I recently exhausted my pad of Canson bristol, and opened a brand new pad of Strathmore brand. The Strathmore doesn't work as well! At least not with my particular techniques. All of my techniques for bleeding, puddling, and layering don't work on this stuff! Not to mention that is has a higher gsm than the Canson, and sucks up way more ink (A waste) while looking less saturated. That's why this piece seems unusually patchy and dull I'm really displeased with the performance of this paper. Sadly, I have two pads of this stuff to use up!

Each side of the Strathmore brand bristol has a slightly different texture. I want to believe that I picked the "wrong" side, and that if I use the other side it will work better. Or maybe I just need to get used to it. But I swear, Strathmore isn't as good for my marker art as Canson. Rude to blame my paper for my artwork's downfalls, I know...

That aside, here's Shirinara again. Not sure I'm going to keep that new outfit.

Sakura Pigma Micron, Prismacolor markers, 8.5 by 11 inch smooth bristol (Strathmore).

on seeing this art, I think the light effect is different from the other arts. on this art, using the light blue on every lighted part instead of using the yellow or that like bright colors, so I feel it's different impression on years ago.

many years later, I notice the attracting feature from this art, it's a different light colors, the light blue is used on the light effect and the many bright stars, so I feel this art have clear impression, the every objects have the subtle light blue color and it make the feature of the art, and I really love this beautiful quiet night world. so I'm amazed on seeing the description on this art, the light blue effect come from the accident, if the pen work goes well, this art may have the different colors. anyhow this art is impressive to me and I add to fave.

Thank you for the awesome comment and for adding this old artwork of mine to your favs! I have always been displeased with this one, but I'm glad that you were able to see good things in it, the things I was going for when I was drawing and coloring it and everything seemed to be going wrong.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear that your bristol paper is different. I really like the effect that it has on the background. You don't see how cool the effect is until you full view it. I like it so don't be too upset!

I can't say that I see as many problems as you do... I actually like the poncho but don't like the skirt. ^.^ I can understand about the paper thing though. For awhile I was using plain white computer paper for my art until I got the Bristol pad, and now i have such a problem with the bumpy ness... sadly my smooth bristol got left at home. Y.Y I like the way the dark turned out though. I don't think it's nearly as bad as you say.

Thanks. But I still say Strathmore sucks monkey nuggets, so to speak. Canson brand is really hard to get, I've found, so I'm going to try Bienfang. Let's hope it works for me!

I actually thought the clothing was kinda cool myself... *laughs*
....alright, I have no idea how to tell if critique is welcome or not at the moment, I can't seem to find it anywhere so if it's not forgive me XD

You're getting into so many things I've never tried before with this that it's hard for me to say much of anything useful, unfortuantely. But I do think most of it actually looks quite nice. The anatomy is mostly good (her right leg from waist to knee is longer than her left though, and it's her left that's the right size) Arms look good though.... the raised one might be a bit long... but that might just be my eyes playing tricks on me. But the anatomy is good, and the pose is great! The night lighting look came through really well! (I can't figure it out for the life of me XD) And the background looks awesome, nice details in there. Great work overall, I say!

i like the concept behind the picture, even if you think everything went wrong. the idea of where the lighting is coming from and at night is good. a deviation from your normal. i love her hair, and like the shirt. so there

Wow... what a strange sky. I agree it's a duller piece (colour and saturation wise) than your others, but it still has a lot of nice features. The sky and stars, in particular, look awesome. I really like those. I agree with Foxxeh regarding the glowing staff light source. Really cool-looking overall though, and hey, more cool colours!

Well I still think it looks good, really nice work on the posing and the colors and lighting look good, odd seeing you working with cool colors than warm.

Thanks. :3 You're right, cool colors are odd for me. It felt weird using them!

I knew something was wrong when all of my juicy, unused blue markers that I rarely touch seemed so dry on this paper. It sucks up an ungodly amount of ink!

Ohhh very nice, I like the darkness and the background is great. I especially like the lightblue that has been worked into it! I also like the desing of the outfit and character! It's no fun when things just don't work... but for everything that went wrong I think it still looks pretty awesome!
One thing I might suggest for the glowling staff as the light source.... If you have any white ink or pen of some sort would be great or try ot leave parts of it white (however maybe a really light blue would work as well)... along the the staff's glow, the orb, and even her fingers, keeping the blue glow but making parts of it lighter just to give the light source more kick, since the light has to reach all the way to her through the dark!
Anyways.... ^__^ it's pretty!!!

Thanks for the input. So many artists use highlights to do wonderful things and I haven't quite been able to wrap my brain around it.

The glow effect on the staff would have worked on my old brand of bristol! It came out like poop on this. I know it's hard for people to believe me when I blame my paper, but my bleeding techniques for glow don't work at all on this stuff.

Ahh! I know what you mean... it's like doing watercolor on watercolor paaper and then on regular sketchbook paper... the absorption is just so different! Never know maybe you'll find a way to make the paper work for you!

Er...actually, I like this picture. It's very different and looks good on my LCD screen. Okay, so I can't see the picture in your head that you wanted this to come out like, but the texture is interesting to me and I love the eerie 'dreamtime' feeling of it. And if you don't like the paper for pencils and markers you could use it for acrylics for an interesting effect. Sorry if you hate it, it's going to my faves anyway.

Thank you very much for the encouragement! I just may have to retire that nasty Strathmore paper for something else. My markers look awful on it!

That new costume kinda looks like Pochantas' costume a little, which might go well with her but if you're not happy with it, it's alright.

The sky in this picture however looks kinda weird, it's supposed to be night, right but the galaxy or stars kinda look darker than the sky itself. The rest of it looks okay, I haven't really notice anything wrong but I guess in real life it would look different. Strangely enough I did do a marker drawing on strathmore bristol and it came out okay, but I'm not the marker artist.

Peachfuzz In reply to Redmagesalyre [2006-09-24 03:18:10 +0000 UTC]

Strathmore sucks up too much ink, dulls the colors, and leaves blotches. I very much prefer Canson. Even my pen didn't function normally on that stuff! Like I said, I hope I used the "wrong" side of the paper or something.

You know, any remotely Native American-ish tassled dress will be compared with Pocahantas. Disney has poisoned that image. Any female Indian-type character makes people think of Pocahantas. At any rate, the mini-poncho thing has to go. I hate it.

The dark spot wasn't actually meant to be a galaxy, but a star-less streak. Hence the darkness and absence of stars. I must've messed it up if it looks weird. Thanks for the input! I'll be more careful.

Redmagesalyre In reply to Peachfuzz [2006-10-11 02:06:13 +0000 UTC]

I see, which is why I mostly use strathmore for my colored pencils (sorry for responding so late, I normally do not get detailed comments like this!) and I rarely use it for ink which I don't use that much due to the difficulty of using ink. I got a canson sketchbook for my multimedia which makes me wonder if I could use ink on it (ponders for a while).

Disney... They also poisoned the image of mermaids too, so whenever I see a red-haired mermaid I think "ARIEL!!!!" That and every fairy tale image, everyone thinks of Disney or the Disney version. I also slightly believe that Disney poisoned the image of animated films, so that's why most people think animation is childish or is for children, whereas in other countries, France and Japan for example it's a medium that is widely distribed and marketed for all age groups and taken more seriously.

It looks nice, but it's good to see you're improving, so go ahead!

Aw, thanks!

I realized suddenly that the main sky color scanned as a lighter color than it really is, making the darker secondary color jut out horribly.
