Description   Long ago, Kuaka was a shrine maiden seeking to win he Hiyanaka Clan's son in a marriage contest by having the best jewelry and luxury in all of Japan.  She even went as far as finding lost treasure across the country to better her chances.  The last piece to her collection is a set of earrings.  These earrings--unknowing of the dangers they carry will turn an unsuspecting mortal into a genie.  Chained to a magical lamp and forever serve his/her masters.  By the time she arrived to her contest, she turned into a genie.  A former shrine maiden turned into a genie as a prisoner to the lamp.

There are some key components to her design before her signature "gold" outfit.

-She was originally white until one of her destinations (India) got a complete tan all over her skin (implying that one of its Indian masters wished her to take her clothes off to appease them).  This became permanently stuck to her skin however and a bit of the Indian aspects altered her original Japanese ethnicity.

-Her hair style has a slight differentiation from her large pony tail in her Post-Arabian design.  Her hair grew longer overtime.  Furthermore, more of her hair's design are both her "bow tie" portion and the two twin tails.  All just mashed together once her former human lover in 1996 got her the golden sultana outfit to replace her former shrine maiden uniform.

-While she doesn't appear any younger than her Post-djinn form, Kuaka was originally 28 when she was turned into a genie.  The lifespan of a genie can range from a thousand to even a million years (though not completely immortal like angels and demons).  Her age was said to be 545 by 2019 when Shantae released her on Cybertron.  Taking this in mind, 500 human years (in my mind at least) would make 1 genie year.  It's at this point where she may even look 29.

The pic is nice, but call me curious, why did she have to be Japanese?  I mean I know that gives context to Shantae's swordsmanship, and Mortal Kombat is mostly Japanese/Chinese, but it just seems a bit odd with Shantae's cultural background.  I mean this with all due respect, and if this is an alternate universe I guess that's all the explanation I need.  Trust me, I've done similar under that same premise.

It may be odd to Shantae's Cultural background if Kuaka wasn't being spread around most of the Eastern and Middle Asian continents as the genie of the lamp.  Throughout each of these locations, many of her masters wished her to grant them things and even changing her original cultural background as was told to do so (such as her tan skin in India, her dragon transformation in China, even her love of fashion before her djinnification in Japan).  It could even imply that Shantae herself has a mixed lineage of culture because of this.

Okay then.  Thanks for the input.  I was using my reasoning based off the original games, but I know this is an alternate take on those.

Which ones?

The series as a whole, which to my knowledge was primarily Turkish.  However your explanation of the food and alternate costumes helped me understand.  I've always wanted an explanation on at least where the Japanese food came from, and I guess your linking Shantae's lineage to Japan through her mother is satisfactory.

Also I hope I didn't upset you with these comments.  I didn't want this to turn into a debate.

Not at all.  I too had this question in my head when WayForward introduces these little details in the games (preferably Pirate's Curse and Half Genie Hero).

Oh that's good.  I'm glad we're ok.  It's hard for someone like me to tell through plain text.

My own little hand wave explanation for those things was "Eh, anime-based games, anime-based items, just roll with it."

Perhaps.  If Shantae never introduced these things by the time Pirate's Curse rolled around, all of these concepts wouldn't make any sense.

Soul Calibur and Tales of Series games are mostly set in a medieval-esque setting and introduces characters from Japan and China.  There's a good chance that some of these characters have a mixed lineage.

I'd also like to add that starting in Pirate's Curse, the series in introducing Japanese condiments such as a bento box and Shantae's Kunoichi outfit in Half Genie Hero.

Yes.  And she’s just as beautiful in her signature golden sultana outfit.
