I've always been Team Veruca, ever since I was a kid. I can distinctly remember getting really excited all the way back in 2005 the first time I saw the Tim Burton film because my two favorite bad kids were back-to-back for interviews and then I got really kinda bored during Mike and Violet's interviews (don't hate me Mike and Violet fans, I think they're great now!) But yeah, Veruca's always been a favorite of mine, especially because "Veruca's Nutcracker's Sweet" is *really* growing on me as a favorite number from the Cast Album. One of my favorite lines is Mr. Salt's exasperated "WONKA HELP HER!" and Willy just says, "I can't - her posture's terrible!" So of course, I had to draw her in her little tutu and pointe shoes and of course that mink - I mean baby seal - coat.Mmmmm.... not sure if I'm completely happy with how this turned out ( two AM doodling and watching German 90's TV on Youtube is just one of the strange perks of summer) so I might do a re-draw when I get back from Europe.

I remembered the 71 version of the movie and it cast a huge impression on myself. I'm even writing a AU fanfic about it.

Thank you! I grew up on the 71 film and of course, the Burton film came out when I was a child so it definitely is synonymous with childhood for me.

Looks are deceiving though! She's all smiles now that Daddy got her a Golden Ticket, but you know she'll so slip back into her ways. XD I'll probably re-draw her in a more bratty position.

I really think she's the brattiest in the musical, but I all like the chilly, poised Veruca from the film. She doesn't have to raise her voice often because she knows she has her Daddy wrapped around her little finger. XD

That was my one problem with Veruca in the movie: she was a bit TOO reserved. The Veruca in the 1971 film was much more what I thought Veruca would be. The Musical version of Veruca put her way over the top, which works in theater, and makes her an almost laughably mean girl. That's just me though.

The 1971 Veruca is definitely more of the brat Dahl described than 2005 Veruca. Theatre does require larger performances than the screen, so I definitely loved Veruca's over-the-topness. She made for some good comic relief, as well as Mrs. Teavee.

There's a cast recording of the song "Veruca's Nutcracker Sweet" and the girl who played Veruca just hits me as being so perfect, because without watching the scene you can just see this girl's face and she just IS Veruca! XD Oh my god this girl is the perfect Veruca. Just the right amount of obnoxious in her voice, she just sounds so right. I love the banter between her and Wonka. "No." ". . .No?" "Yes- no." "No?" "Yes - no." "No one. Says no. To. Veruca. SALT!" She and Wonka did it spot on.

I just loved how Scarlet went from sounding so sweet and innocent to suddenly being so vicious haha You can hear the tone change as she is told "No" by Wonka. The girl's obviously NEVER been told "No" by anyone, and I think she actually goes kind of (pardon the pun) nuts. You can hear it when she's calling the squirrels that her voice sounds almost unhinged, not so much that she's obnoxious.

I love just the shock in her voice, the uncertainty when Wonka first tells her "no". She's bewildered by it because she's never had anyone say that to her before.Ā

I love how she says "No one. says "NO!". to Veruca. SALT!" You can almost see her just kind of twitching as she says it lol
