Oh! Not on hair. Her hair is beautiful, but little curls and bits like the curl at her temple and the shirt bit hanging in front of her face? Some people. like Disney Fan on Marina Seadrift, do that to be cute, but really? It just looks like she got gum in her hair and someone cut it out and she's got short bits sticking out.

Yeah I know, it should be more stringy/ spread out if it's wet and getting stuck to parts of her face. I meant to put in more individual stringy stands but I forgot.

Well it has nothing to do with it being more stringy. It has more to do with not putting in tiny little pieces that are much shorter than the rest of the hair that don't make sense.

Not really. That's called 'layered hair' It's the same basic thing as a bang only grown out a little. For instance: I cut my hair into a bob 3 years ago, now that I've let it grow the back is way longer than the front (the front receives more damage and doesn't grow as fast). Not only this but I also have an asymmetric bang, so my hair is in fact three different lengths - short up front, mid length in the middle and long in the back. Usually when I gather it in my hands the front falls out of my grasp because it's too short to stay in the group.
Here I managed to collect some pics of my layered hair: [link] see how my shorter stands are on top and stick out - especially in the longer one.

LOL
My hair is layered too. I know exactly what layered hair is, thank you.
However, neither you, nor I, have one tiny little piece that curls straight up on the top of our heads when there is obviously no layer there or no other pieces that short. Or one piece that hangs about to our chin when the rest of the hair is down the back, again with no other pieces that short.
In your drawing those are individual hunks that are sticking out, and there is clearly no layer. So, either draw in a layer where there is none or loose the single lonely short pieces.

It's just, with the pieces that stick out in my layered hair and yours, there's not just one random piece, but rather a whole layer. You have many pieces that stick out as they are all part of the same layer. Mine is the same way. But, there's nothing the indicate an extremely short layer on top of her head, and a shorter-than-bang-length fringe on the top of her head would be an ugly haircut anyway, and obviously she has gorgeous hair. So, that tiny little curl on top just looks like someone cut gum out of her hair or something.

OH! You mean that little curl on top! *facepalm* Sorry, I didn't know what piece you were talking about - I thought you were talking about the piece dangling in her face. Ok, yes, that little bit is a little awkward looking. I see what you mean now.

Well, you've also drawn that bit as an isolated piece too without a corresponding layer. And yeah, they both look strange. But that "gum cut out of hair" curl on top is the most obvious and worst, yes.

I'd recommend doing an anatomy study on shoulders. Both characters have messed up shoulders here. Also, the shading around her arm muscles seems.... odd. That point-and-dip thing isn't really working for you. It makes her arm look segmented.
You've done the blur thing to bring the background out of focus, which is technically ok, but it looks like you just put a photoshop filter over him. The contrast between the line and his skin tone is so hard, and his color is so much brighter than hers it kind of kills any good the blur might have done. I'd recommend instead of just using a filte r to blur it, actually paint him with less detail, less contrast, and in a more muted tone.
It has nothing to do with him being lighter-skinned and her being darker-skinned. That is the way it is. But he should be painted in more muted colors with less contrast and less detail, rather than just pained as though he were in the foreground and then blurred, which is exactly the way it looks.
I hope that helps.

Actually, it was the blur brush...and it didn't come out the way I wanted so yes, your tip was helpful. I did her arms like that so it would look like she's actually using them to squeeze the water out of her hair. Normally I do a softer shading on skin but I was more precise this time because they're supposed to be out in strong direct light.

VictorianPaperAngel In reply to Musashden [2010-07-25 15:12:28 +0000 UTC]
Well yes, but my point is painting him with less detail and in colors that aren't as bright and with less contrast will make him look like he's in the background. Painting him normally as if he's in the foreground and blurring him (However you blur him is totally irrelevant) will not.
