Was this shot wide open? You really have a knack about shooting this kind of picture. Inspiring.

Hi Jack,
I don't get to dA much anymore. Sorry for the year wait. She's my god daughter. First generation Irish in the country. Her parents are from the west of Ireland. I look at her and I see the generations of farm girls on her mothers side and beautiful aristocratic city girls from her fathers side in Galway. Very classical face. I shot the image with 8x10 polaroid cross processed to the the chocolate effect. Used swings and tilts on the camera to force the plane of focus and yes, I shot it with a 300mm lens wide open. Built the set for the shot. Used the big windows in my studio for lighting.

You know, I monkey around in Photoshop to get effects like this and when I see the results of real film I knock myself on the forehead and remind myself what film really does. Thank you for the wake up call.

And the cost of large format equipment has plummeted so you could be doing the real film thing pretty cost effectively. The amount of film equipment I still have is pretty surprising. I shoot digital for a living with Fuji 680 for the swing and tilt effect with digital backs. Get some of the same effects without all the film thrash. Let me know if you decide to go that way. I'm a great resource.

I know what you mean. I am looking at Horseman press cameras and the price is astonishingly low, beyond my wildest dreams! I will get one for sure. And then spend a king's ransom for a digital back as a backup...

The tight framing , the slight blur , the emptyness of the surroundings and the soft tones...all add up to a wonderful portrait
