Description 6-15-06: I tinkered some more with it, mostly the hair and the skin tones. I think I'm done for now though. Thanks for all your suggestions, people, very much appreciated!

6-13-06: It has happened! I've gone digital! A friend gave me Painter IX so I emptied my piggy bank and got myself a graphic tablet. This was really meant to happen sooner or later, ever since I first encountered digital art I always wanted to try it, so here I am. This was mostly trial and error since I'm still learning all the tricks and getting a feel for my tablet.

Thanks! Glad you like it. I actually find digital easier than traditional media. There's no "undo" button on my brushes, and I get only about 12 colors as opposed to the digital millions of colors.

Amazing. Simply gorgeous. The colors are so vibrant and so beautiful. Her face is great, and looks very much alive. Wonderful detail in the cloth. The design is great. I can't believe this is your fist time using a digital medium. The only thing I feel iffy about is the hair. I feel as though there should be more color variation/shading involved. The highlights/shiny parts are great, and so are the individual strands. I'm just missing some darker colors toward the top of her head. You've got it happening well in the hair next to her chin. Other than that, this is a beautiful piece.

Thanks! A valid suggestion about the hair, I hated it too. I fixed it (somewhat). Too tired to do more, LOL.

Cool - and recognizably your art style, so IMO you're already getting a grip on the medium, making it do what you want it to do. I look forward to seeing more of your digital works!

Ah, so this is the illustrious digital piece that you've been having trouble with, yes? It turned out lovely, especially for a first try (it even makes me kind of jealous )! Just as everybody else has been pointing out, I too am amazed that your first try turned out so well. True, it makes sense just to do everything you would with traditional media in a digital format, but it's still somewhat a challenge.

The color choice you used is superb, especially in your silk(?) shawl, with it's changing blues and purples in the white. It has the smoothness of silky fabric, and contrasts nicely against her textured dress. The skin tones are great too; personally I think getting the right range is the hardest thing in a painting - probably because skin is made up of so many colors, an artist can get so backward when trying to make it seem natural. And though simple, the background and surroundings are very nicely done. Some constructive criticism would be with the flowers and hair, though. Because the flowers are in front of her and closer to the 'viewing lens,' wouldn't they be clearer than they are? I understand that she's the focal point, but it seems strange to have fuzzy background and fuzzy foreground. And while her hair is lovely, it seems to be lacking some more depth and shine. The curl around her ear seems good, but the top looks a little flat and almost too brown...That little bit of blue in the ear curl makes it look really alive and real; perhaps adding something like that up top?

Other than that everything else is beautiful. You did a very good job on the wings, making them look incandescent, lofty, and very pretty. And I also like the little addition of the shine from the snow on her nose and lips; the subleties are what really make a picture, huh? Maybe having that same white-ish reflection on the rest of her face would make the piece look even better, instead of the warm yellow hues (okay I lied; there's another tip). But if I could have the skill to go into a new realm and come out so victorious, I would surely make tons of wonderful art in so many mediums. I can't imagine what's going to come of this after you get more time of practice in. I think we're going to have another 'DA Master' to watch more closely .

Wow, thank you so much for such an in-depth comment, and for all your suggestions! I appreciate it, and agree with most of them. Glad you like the piece. I think I have a looong while to go until "master" though!

About the fuzzy flower - I suspect you're seeing fuzzy because of the reduced image size. Check out the closeups page on my site (I posted it in the description). The bottom petals are snowed on a little, but the rest is all done in hard lines, no fuzzies.

Ah, I see what you mean about the flowers now . I think the fuzzyness is due to the smaller size of the image.

Still lovely though!

This is really, really pretty, although a bit too smooth for my taste, even for a digital piece.
But I absolutely adore her scarf. Those flowers are amazing.

MJWilliam In reply to natazzle [2006-06-14 17:38:43 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I think it's the fact that I've been doing oils for so long. Anything I knew in real life I just translated into the digital media. Took me a while to get the hang of it, especially all those settings. Let's see... I used a flat camel oil brush to put down the basic colors, then grainy blender oil brush to smooth them out, then flat camel again for details and a spackled brush for texture (I think it's called medium bristle but I can't remember off hand).
