How big is yours? Mine are all tiny - the biggest I've completed so far is just shy of 3" across.
I'm assuming (from other comments) that you are Japanese or, if born in the USA, have that heritage. Would you do me the honor of checking out the temari I have in my gallery?

Is there a good site on the internet for learning how to do this, or maybe one with patterns? I would love to try it!

I'm staring at how the different colors of thread are interwoven and can't see how it can be done! You are truly gifted.

Thank you! I kept changing the set up for this one because the temari looked so lonely and small by itself. This is actually one of my favorite pictures because it turned out so pretty.

That's why I put the little stories behind the traditions here, because I know everyone has their own traditions and I really wanted to share mine and hear what others do!

Oh, absolutely, though the majority of the Hawaiian crafts centered around carving, which I'm just no good at. They carved everything, stone, wood, bone, gourds, shells. Wood carving was huge with our culture. Other than that, there was weaving (they made beautiful mats that they used to make entire shelters out of... floors, walls and roof)! I've done a little weaving in the old style, but, again, it's not something I'm very good at. I think because they were a very primitive society (you were either a hunter, a farmer or a fisherman) the majority of Hawaiian crafts were more functional than decorative. I have some bowls that were hand carved and I think they're gorgeous, but to anyone else, they would probably just look like bowls. Nothing special.

I was thinking as I read your comment, that you could sort of amalgamate both traditional Hawaiian and Japanese decoration into your crafts.

Very true! One of the characteristics I've definitely gotten from my Hawaiian heritage is the fact that while I love pretty things, but I also like them to serve a purpose other than taking up shelf space.

Thank you! I followed a pattern for this temari, so it wasn't as confusing as it could have been. Getting it started is a real pain-in-the-butt, but once you have all of the guide pins and threads marked off, actually stitching the pattern on the ball goes pretty quickly. It's that whole "getting started" thing that takes forever and makes you want to quit a dozen times before you even get anywhere because I learned the hard way that you can screw this up really easily!

I love being able to share some of my Buddhist and Shinto stuff with everyone. All of my friends and family here heard all of this years ago, so they're not interested anymore. Being on dA gives me a whole new collection of people I can get excited with!

You're welcome! It does look a bit like a quilt, only more colorful than the quilts I've ever seen.
