Description The Daruma symbolizes good luck and protection in Japan. Traditionally, a Daruma doll would be given to someone starting a new venture, celebrating a birthday, or at the beginning of a New Year. One eye is painted in at the start of an endeavor and a wish is made for good luck. When the goal is reached, the other eye is painted in.

I made these Daruma while watching the annual Red and White Song Festival (from Japan) several New Year's ago. My two crochet Daruma are pictured here with my little authentic one. I used my real guy as a guide to make my crocheted ones.

Thanks! My project list is completely filled for this year, as well as for part of next year. I really like your idea of the Matrioshka dolls, so I'll keep it in mind for when I have time, though it might not be until late next year or even the year after!

So cute! Hmm..wait, so when someone gives another person a daruma doll, it doesn't have eyes yet? (I always thought they already have eyes, but then again I didn't know anything regarding the information you posted. )

minami63 In reply to winter-fall [2008-01-29 02:48:45 +0000 UTC]

Nope... a new daruma doesn't come with eyes, just big white circles. When you make your wish, or set your goal, then you color in one of the circles. Once you've gotten your wish or achieved your goal, then you can color in his other eye.

Kawaii is not a strong enough word for this! The embroidered "minami" was the first aspect I was drawn to.
I actually got one of these for Christmas, but it's shaped like a cat.

Oh, cool... you got a maneki neko! I was fortunate enough to find a collection of miniature maneki at a brand new Japanese store that opened up, practically within walking distance from where I work! I really need to count how many maneki I have now. I think I must have about 12 - 15 different ones in all kinds of sizes, colors and poses! I'm also thinking of crocheting one of those sometime in the future!

Have you got any nodding ones? They're so adorable! Yup, Japanese stores are way too addictive

I have a Hidamari no Tami one that nods and waves its right paw. It has a small solar panel in its base, so whenever there's enough light, it starts nodding and waving. Very cute!

Oh yes! I have a sunshine buddy, which has a similar function I wonder how they whole waving-cat thing started!

No idea, though I'm guessing that it's supposed to be welcoming you or beckoning luck to come to you. Something like that...
