Description Pointillism portrait drawing of Benedict Cumberbatch, best known for his role as Sherlock Holmes in BBC Sherlock.

I know, I've drawn him before.. this is the fourth time actually. I just can't get enough of his remarkable and beautiful face! Gotta love those cheekbones.

Drawn with Derwent Coloursoft pencils.

Wow. This is amazing. What sort of process does this require? Is it easier than sketching?

Thank you!

In my opinion, it's more difficult than sketching. All it really is, is drawing dots. But because I use colored pencils (instead of the usual ink or sharpies for pointillisms, as most people do) there's a lot of wrist movements in my process. I can't do this for more than half an hour at a time, it starts to hurt after that.

So do you sketch it out first, or is it sort of free hand?
I'm absolutely dreadful at art, but I think that I could draw dots... Maybe. If I had an outline to follow.

It's impossible to sketch it out first, I wouldn't be able to erase it after, as that would smudge the colored pencil.

Regular drawings are a lot easier than this, in my opinion. It may seem easy because it's dots, but it's more difficult because it's tricky to see where the dots should go. And if you make a mistake, you can't erase it. Colored pencils never fully erase, they smudge instead. Ink or sharpie doesn't erase at all, unfortunately.

These take a lot of time to do, because it has to be so careful & precise.

His face is exquisite. I think I have a thing for cheekbones though, it's my weakness.
