Description New Holland Honeyeaters, blue banded bee and bottlebrush.

Funny, I was researching native bees about a month ago (I know, it's a weird pasttime, but I like reading about stuff like that) when I first came across info on the blue banded bee. They are one of many beautiful and interesting native Australian bees. I'd never seen one before (or probably never noticed them ) I first saw one two days after reading about them, and the thing you can't see from a photo or painting is the absolute fat fuzzy cuteness of one in real life. They're so adorable you can imagine hugging them like a teddy bear

I've seen honey eaters in fairly good numbers at the botanic gardens here in Canberra, and wanted to paint them for a long time. I think they're quite beautiful.

Just as an aside, we've had unsettled weather this last couple of weeks. A storm was coming in a couple of days ago...ahead of the storm I saw two things I've never seen before-- First, two wedge tail eagles being chased by a couple of galahs! I've never seen them in the city before, though I've had some awe inspiring close encounters with them in the bush...it was so funny to see them being chased by two much smaller and very obnoxious galahs.

And a peregrin falcon was perched on our back fence not 20 minutes later!

I wonder if the wild weather had driven them into the city to seek shelter, we don't often see raptors in the 'burbs...or at least *I* don't

Anyway, enough geeky bird talk... I hope you enjoy this & thanks for looking. Comments and critique always welcome. Apologies if I can't answer right away, this is going to be a busy weekend...hope you're all enjoying yours as well

I like the fact you've drawn one looking at the camera. I draw birds compulsively and I still haven't managed to do that successlly, although I have tried it on occasion, I usually draw in profile...

This is amazing! *_* I love watching these little honeyeaters in the wild, and you have captured them perfectly! Also, is that bee also found in Western Austalia, because I think I have seen one or one like it before?

Hello fellow Australian!! I had another weird experience like that with a falcon recently. I stepped outside my house one day to find a falcon right up close grabbing an entire bird's nest and flying off, with the brood's parents (a pair of Silver Eyes) chasing after it and screaming in total panic. It was quite an experience!!

PS

Great work!

Aw, poor little silver eyes...but a falcons' gotta eat What an interesting experience, though, to see a falcon in action like that The birds I saw were all being harrassed by more pleblian species, they weren't exactly acting dignified lol.

Beautiful picture once again. The color of the bee is so different than the birds - I really like the contrast.

Thank you They are indeed very different colouring...I love the rich colours of the honeyeaters and had to put the bee in front of a flower so he wouldn't fade into the background!

It was great But I bet you've seen some pretty awesome raptors in your area as well...I remember we used to see eagles (I think they were bald eagles, even?! Can't remember) in Arkansas when I was a kid.

I've seen a few hawks and some of them have been eye catching, but that's about it. I saw what I thought was a Snowy Owl in OH once and that was day stopping.

It was shocking. I saw this big white blur swooping out of a mulberry tree onto the board fence and then see this big white body and broad head turning. He was there for maybe 45 seconds before flying off and I was mesmerized, trying to take in all the details for comparison with my book. I watched for him to come back all day but he didn't. What was he doing out in the middle of the morning? We were really a little too far south for him. Get blown off course?

Times like that you never had a camera ready and even if you did it sounds like it was almost too fast to use one! Yeah, maybe there'd been a storm and that's why he was in an unusual area I think that's why we saw those raptors by our house recently, the weather was really wild here for a week or so.

Oh wow, absolutly gorgeous. I can't help but marvel at this. I simply adore it. The New Holland Honeyeaters are simply delightful little birds. There's never any shortage of them here. You've captured them so wonderfully. And lucky me, the bottlebrush is one of my favourite Australian flowers, they're so unique.

Lucky you with the Wedge tails... I've seen one, though we were driving, I saw a very large bird sitting on a fence post, it looked so powerful and regal... I just know it was a Wedgie, even though we drove past it fairly quick.

Beautiful composition on this piece. It's so lovely.

Thank you so much, it's always lovely to hear from people who have the same love for these native animals (and see them often!). I don't see these birds very often, they aren't common close to my house...but I've seen them at the National Botanical Gardens I guess that's partly why it's such a treat when they're around.

Aw, wedgetails! I'm so in awe of these birds! We came across two waaaay out in the bush once, they were next to a dirt road (just a few meters from our car) out past Wee Jasper. Husband stopped the car so we could watch them, it was just awe inspiring...my husband said when they opened their wings to take off he couldn't believe how big their wingspan was...it was like they just kept opening...and opening...bigger and bigger until you couldn't believe it! They're so huge. I definitely want to paint them sometime

Oh..beautiful! I love honeyeaters too . I'm so jealous that you had a peregrine on your fence!! The only falcon I've seen in the wild is in the distance, on the nullarbor...lol.

thank you, and for the fav! I'd never seen a peregrin here either...or anywhere for that matter. The currawongs and magpies were all divebombing him, which was pretty weird since I'd just seen two wedgetails being harrassed by galahs! Funny to see a hunter harrassed by their prey

Beautiful birds, bees and bottlebrush.

I've seen bald eagles before but usually from a distance; one day, however, I was out on my porch and saw one swoop down with talons extended as if to grab some small prey and then just as fast, fly right back up. I was stunned.
