Description Well, here I am spammin' you all with Artemis updates again, but then I haven't updated this for ages...moved the last WIP to scraps, where you can compare to see progress.

I love this painting so much I don't want to finish it. It's more like a place where I go than something I'm creating. I pick up working on it when I feel the need to recharge, and it always does that for me. And at the rate I'm going it may be a place where I go for a long time...gee has it been almost a year since I started working on it??? Wow...that's a record for me

I've finished the peregrine and golden hind (antlers need more work, they should look like gold. Metallic...)

Artemis almost finished, dogs need work, the branch over her head (oak tree) needs darker under branches behind and evening out of the colour. Rocks, foreground and dogs need finishing.

I often listen to NPR and BBC radio online while I work, the fires in Greece made me wish she were hunting arsonists...

Nice! Would love to see one in your style for Selene - Goddess of the Moon.

You depicted Artemis very well! A lot of people confuse her as a primary goddess of the moon, although she is also that, she is not as prominent as a moon goddess as Selene sister of Apollo who is often forgotten. Even if her brother and sister is Helios god of the sun and Eos goddess of the dawn. Would have been great if you could slightly put a moon in the sky even in the daytime the moon can still be present. Don't worry about the bear. Bears where not in Greece!

Well done! You should really focus on more gods and goddesses in your style.

Sorry I can't edit or delete my comment:

I was wrong. Artemis is sister of Apollo. Selene is sister of Helios and Eos.

This painting is absolutely incredible! It's quite clear that you've spent so much time on it. Your image of Artemis is almost exactly how She appears to me. You've captured just about every key element associated with Her; the only one that's missing is a bear. I especially love your detail in the muscles of the animals and the folds of the dress. Your eye for detail and your perception of lighting/shadowing are phenomenal!

Oh my god. This is really good - I expected you to have like around, what, 10000 faves!

The details are absolutely amazing. Wonderful, wonderful composition - what else do you expect from a Goddess of Hunt and Moon? Artemis herself fits the image as a Virgin Goddess.

I'd be totally insane if I didn't fave this.

The detail work on this is absolutely stunning! I really like the perspective on this too, almost as if we're intruding on a quiet moment. Beautiful painting, and it's nice to see that even extremely skilled artists can take all the time they need to finish a piece.

Aw, thanks so much for your comment on this! I'm still plugging away at it, but just bits at a time...yep, I'm not very goal oriented on this piece, I just want to play around and take my time with it

tanabatablossom In reply to MBoulad [2007-10-14 15:50:21 +0000 UTC]

You're most welcome! It's a lovely piece and look like it could fit into a book of fables (I hope that's the right word). It's comforting to know that not every painting has to have a goal in the planning stages, but you can just start somewhere and have fun with it, and see where it ends up. Now that is what I call brilliant!

I find it amazing how you can put aside a picture and come back to it months later and still be able to pick it up so easily. (I have a tendency to tire of old projects, so they just get cast aside permanently). Love where you're taking this, and I look forward to seeing the end result... someday.

Hi Far (sorry I'm so behind answering here )

It does take a bit of time to get my bearings again when I pick up an old work, and I have to stop and think about what my original intentions were sometimes. For the most part it's like going back to a house you used to live in. You can still remember where the bathroom, living room, bedrooms and kitchen are, but you might have forgotten just why you put up those ugly curtains or what that half finished scaffold in the backyard was all about lol...

Yeah, I'm getting a bit antsy to finish this, it will be nice to finally submit the finished product. But a little scary, I have no excuse for mistakes, having taken so much time on it

Oh wow! This is going really great I love the details in it. I really love the composition, and she's so beautiful. The water is so lush, the sky is so reviving, along with the tree, sea and cliffs. Can't wait for this to be done.

Hi hon I haven't seen you around much since that DD for Dragon Child, did it wear you out answering all the comments?

Sometimes when someone I know gets a DD I think "Well it's about time!", that was definitely the case with yours

Thanks for your comments. I've enjoyed working on this one, but I keep putting it down after awhile...I get so wrapped up in it that I need a break, I don't want it to end up being a chore to finish! I'm really happy with the progress I feel I've gotten from the experience, tho

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Elaynies In reply to MBoulad [2007-09-29 01:24:39 +0000 UTC]

Nay! Never think so my dear!
I've been worn out by so many stuff that goes around my life lately, that I've gone very absent and idle for quite a long time 'Tis some serious artist block I'm going through these days. Not to mention, that DD came into about the worst of times lol

That's very pretty actually, I'm so happy about how it reached so far too. it's getting prettier and prettier by time. Oh yeah it's so good when you enjoy the time as you progress through a painting, give a nice feeling of accomplishment You're right about it, the best way to take it is the easy way. Wish you luck with it hon

I've seen a lot of takes on Artemis, here on DevArt, but this one is my all-time favorite. Almost exactly how I would imagine the Goddess. *claps happily* Especially because her eyes and hair are dark, rather than the blonde I've seen people give her. Since Artemis is Greek, I always envision her with dark coloring. So awesome.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MBoulad In reply to FeyWhyte [2007-09-24 12:12:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your comment Yes! I started out wanting her to look clearly Greek, and still want that look, but I've ended up softening her look to be a bit more ambiguous...I want her to have a touch of all of us. I've ended up working her hair to include all hair colours, even: Black, brown, red and blonde...and her eyes colour has dark brown through blue and green highlight. We'll see how it plays out, though, I might change my mind

It's nice to have a place to retreat to =^_^=
And it's getting to look so good!

I've started working more on my art now too, uploading it to a professional site go get critique then fixing what they see =^_^=
I have nothing in my gallery to show of in a hope to get a job... I need to do something about that (As I need to apply for jobs from next summer) I have to many physical and mental restriction to hold any.. "ordinary" jobs... Art is my only hope (in the form of 3D combined with 2D. Maybe in design? But dream job is children book illustrations)
I'll have to practice allot this year, and hope that it pays of

MBoulad In reply to Zun0 [2007-09-19 03:22:54 +0000 UTC]

Hi, hon I'm glad you're going for critique, it really does help to get pointers from other people, doesn't it? Don't worry too much about having something for your gallery yet, you are lucky (so young!), just keep working steadily and you'll get where you want to go! Every bit helps Even (especially) the mistakes, I find I learn more when I mess things up than when they're going smoothly...

I know what you mean about a regular job, I'm in the same boat It would be next to impossible for me to have a 9 to 5 job in our situation anyway...not that I'd want one anyway, I get overwhelmed so quickly in that environment.

Of course your practice will pay off You've already made great strides since I've met you here on DA.

Thanks for your comments, Michelle (did you realise we have the same name? ) I've enjoyed working on this so much, I really love having a work like this sitting around....something I can just sit and practically go into a dream state while I work. Painting highlights on leafs and playing with colours in the rocks to my hearts content lol...

I look forward to finishing it, lately, so I guess that means it will be done sometime soon I'm ready for a new one...

It's a very complex composition and I look forward to seeing it finished. It's going really really well. It's really well balanced color and value wise with good compositional, side to side balance and good eye movement back through the picture. All you really have is some detail work to finish up with minor little tweaks here and there, that you mentioned. Bravo!
