Okay, I'm just going to come out and say that you sir, are brilliant! All of you're art even the old ones are virtually flawless, and the fact that you've improved your style over time just shows off your evloution as an artist. Bearing that in mind, I really like this depiction of Amon...but I felt really let down by the season one finale of Korra. I know! I know! What I mean to say is, it wasn't terrible, I was just expecting something other than, the deformed villain with a freudian excuse to hate benders wasn't deformed (he's disgustingly good-looking. Plus they teased us with fake scarring that washed right off), his freudian excuse stems from his daddy issues (and who could blame him? Yakone was a douche) and he was a waterbender. I mean, the story does track, sort of, although there was never a satisfactory example as to how Yakone and his bloodline could bloodbend without a full moon (Toph's metalbending was explained although Combustion Man was always left vague) but I'm nitpicking. I guess I just liked the character before I knew he was a bender. It doesn't ruin the whole show for me because there were a lot of things to love about it. Bottom line, if it were my story I would have done it differently but it's not so I'll just move on. I really like this piece. The coloring is very muted giving Amon (I don't care what his real name is, he'll always be Amon to me) a sense of mystery and hidden power which is what made him so charismatic in the first place. I especially like how one eye is concealed in shadow, giving him a very sinister feel. Even though he got downgraded and somewhat abruptly killed off in the end, he was still a pretty kickass villain. Thanks for sharing your work.

The Korra finale was all things considered "acceptable". What bugged me though was that the Big Reveal that Amon was a bender doesn't actually change anything. Benders still have an unnatural advantage over nonbenders, and they're still in control of most positions of power. If anything, the revelation that a powerful bender had taken up the cause of the underclass should become even more admirable to them. They followed him because of these grievances, not just because he was a badass nonbender.
Oh, and then there was the final-three-minutes-wrapup where Suddenly Korra is handed her bending back on a silver platter, masters energybending and magically fixes everything, nullifying any impact and significance any sacrifices might have had. I usually abhor the term "deus ex machina", but I really couldn't think of any better way to describe it.
But you can bet your ass that Korra won't ever use energybending to give bending to nonbenders. Only those that were arbitrarily born with such power should ever be allowed to have it, isn't that right.

Excellent points. And I wholeheartedly agree on the resolution Mike and Bryan pulled out of ther asses, elated as I was to see Lin Bei Fong's bending restored. It was Aang regaining access to the Avatar state by taking a sharp rock to the back all over again. Never mind deep introspection and self-denile. All you need's a rock. But you're right, nothing's changed for the non-benders for good or ill, though that might be explored in season two. I'm betting there's going to be a lot of resentment and mistrust boiling over between the two classes that will inevitably erupt into violence. Perhaps the Equalists will gain a new leader like...the Megaphone Guy? That'd be a sight! I can already see him wearing Amon's mask and shouting slogans and platitudes on his little soapbox in the park.

I would like to know if the spirits really granted Amon the power to take away bending because of something the Avatar did

I think he's more or less locking off benders' acess to their chi instead of removing the ability altogether.

the equalists use chi-blocking, right? so it would make sense that Amon would a more powerful and long lasting form of chi-blocking to close off a bender's chi necessary to bend.
when Amon used his chi-locking on 'lighting bolt zolt' in a previous episode, he touched a point on zolt's back that looked like it was in the same spot that aang got zapped in. that injury cut off aang's access to the avatar state, so imagine the damage that could do to a normal bender.

True. Yet I suspect that Amon is more than just a chi-blocker.

"EVERYONE MUST SUCK LIKE ME!"
That's the REAL slogan for the Equalists. No one chooses to be a bender. They're just born with it. Thinking "If I get rid of bending, the world will be sunshine and rainbows!" is STUPID! Okay, let's say he does get rid of all the bending forever and ever. THEN WHAT?! Big, tall, strong assholes will STILL come about and pick on small weaker prey. (Kinda like how every living organism has worked since the dawn of time.) Get rid of bending and the bad guys will just pick up swords and guns (if they exist in this universe, I'm sure they do. They have cars so I'm sure they have guns.) Heck, if anything BENDING is the REAL tool of equality. Look at TOPH! Without her bending she would just be another potential soccer ball for guys like THE BOULDER to kick around. BUT WITH HER BENDING OF THE EARTH ELEMENT she actually stands a chance of holding her own against a whole army of super muscle bound monsters like bandits and ravenous raiders.
All this being said, Amon is one of my favorite villains ever. It's WAY more fun to have a villain one cane relate/debate than one who is just mustache twirling evil for the hell of it. Like how Ozai was, who wanted to take over the world because his grandfather got bored and started this whole mess.

I agree with you there fully!
Although, if I ever got to talk to Amon I would have to ask him how is it fair for him to take others bending away. I mean, if you think about, it's not the benders fault they can bend and how is his stealing their bending equal or fair to the benders, when nonbenders never had it to lose in the first place.
In a sense, it's the same as hating someone because they're more talented then you. Even if you take away their talent, somehow, you didn't make yourself equal to them, or viseversa, you simply crippled someone of their natural ability
This is just my opinion of course! Anyway, Amon is for sure my all time favorite Villain! He has everything you need for one of the most bad ass villains out there

Or hating TALL people because some tall people can be jerks sometimes to short people. So he hatches an evil scheme to magically make everyone the same height of just five feet or something. Makes about as much sense.

Wait, so the guy who beats up criminals and wants equality is the bad guy? I hope this doesn't turn into a theme of "Everything is fine the way it is, always follow the assigned authority (Avatar) and never revolt no matter how bad the government is or you're the bad guy." Considering how the media is, I wouldn't be surprised -_-

True, even ants and other hive-minded creatures, are not equal to one-another in a colony. Each may be a genetic clone of the other, but each one gains their own set of behaviors and experiences wich they share with their brethren to enhance the other individuals' self-being.

When I first saw the released episodes, it got my brain churning. First thought I cam up with was that he is somehow related to Ozi (who would be VERY mad at benders for being disposed by the avatar, and having his son take the thrown) or Azula (who was driven insane (ok, MORE insane) by Katara and Zuko). One thing we have to remember is that Amon looks to be about the same age, if not a little older, the Kora.
(im rambling again)

However, if Amon is in fact an energy bender, the same power that he uses to deprive individuals of their bending powers, Korra (in theory) can use to restore them.

coolclaytony In reply to Brony4 [2012-04-25 09:29:00 +0000 UTC]
Nor did I suggest she could. I'm saying that the basic principle of energy bending (if that is indeed what Amon is employing) would suggest that just as an energy bender can remove bending, they could also restore it. I make nothing more than predictions. To pretend like I know the direction the story's going only degrades me as a fan and would only make me feel bad when and if I would turn out to be wrong.
