Description This was my first major project working with chainmaille or scalemaille.
Shown is fron and side views, along with detail of the strap and the decoration.
Hope ya like it!

It was completed in roughly 12-15 hours- about 1 week's work while sitting in the commons at school, just killing time between classes. Naturally, there were plenty of other people there distracting me, which is why I do not have a better tiem estimate... I mean seriously, it's like bugs to those littel zapper thingies when you have something shiny. XP

Now for the boring details!
Approximately 200-250 large scales for the cups
Approximately 200 small scales for the neck strap
The back strap is leather, and for future peices (for comfort's sake!) the top part of the neck strap will be as well.
Fits probably C-DD, 38 or smaller. Shown is 36 DD
The centerpeice is called a Celtic Star- [link]
The scales were ordered from www.theringlord.com
They have an excelent variety of tools and supplies for chainmaille or other metalworkings. give them some love!

[On a side note, I am considering taking comissions for these. I don't know how much interest there would be however, so if you have any feedback, I would love to hear it! Please keep in mind that these would be rather expensive... about $125-150 plus supplies ($40-60) and shipping (this one weighs roughly 2 lbs.)]

Thanks for checking it out! Cheers!

That looks AMAZING! I've been thinking about doing scales for a long while now, but never did it. I have heard that Scale sells really well, and that a lot of people ask for it. I would also raise your price some. Definately charge AT LEAST $10 an hour plus all your materieals and overhead. But keep it up, it looks awsome

Thankyou! I would definately suggest getting into scale work- it is so much fun! Once I make a few more peices I think I'll open up and ebay store or something like that. But first and foremost I need to find someplace I can buy leather for straps. if I use scale they dig in a bit

Marubaii In reply to Marubaii [2006-11-25 04:17:09 +0000 UTC]

I'll be looking. I'm sure I can find some plain leather belts somewhere.... Just hopefully they will be in my price range... ^_^;

I've been looking to get my hands on some stuff like belt blanks and some more buckles. Between the armour I am working on right now for the SCA, and the fact that I dual Wield, there aren't too many sword belts for both hands to draw from, let alone room for my other weapons. So if you could, let me know if you find anything. And I'll be sure to let you know if i find anything myself..

Please don't think me perverted for noticing this, but I really do like the way the scale accents the shape of your bust. It gives it a more full look that is hard to achieve normally wth chainmaille. I would definitely say to start selling. I know plenty of women who would want to pay for such a top.

Marubaii In reply to TjayBrandon [2006-11-22 03:56:44 +0000 UTC]

I think you not a pervert, no worries. and Thanks! (though the "full look" may just be due to the size in the first place... ^_^;;; )
I plan to start selling, as soon as I find somplace to buy leather for the straps. If I use scale or even chainmaille it makes it rather uncomfortable.
And if ya know people, send 'em my way!! I can finnish one in two-three days, about 10 hours.

Marubaii In reply to ChaynLynx [2006-11-21 05:30:08 +0000 UTC]

Why thankyou! Once I get more money->supplies I plan to make a serpentine costume- long skirt and different sort of top. I just have to figure out a way to make it stretch- it has a bit of horizontal stretch but not enough to make it preactical for such a costume.. It'll be a challenge, but from the looks of things I won't need to worry abot it for a while

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaynLynx In reply to Marubaii [2006-11-23 03:15:32 +0000 UTC]

I'm a big fan of EPDM (rubber) rings to increase the stretchiness of a chainmail piece. Built under a scale section, it might add the stretch factor you need without compromising the look. It probably wouldn't work, but I've never let THAT feeling get in the way of experimentation. *grin*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marubaii In reply to ChaynLynx [2006-11-23 18:02:21 +0000 UTC]

XD
well, the basic concept of scale is euro 4 in one with every other ring being a scale... but that would mean that you woudl have to cut , place, and then re-seal the rubber rings in order to make it work properly.... either that or knowing me I'd probably find some insanely complicated way of doing it that in the end would not even be worth the amount of time it took to do ^_^;;;
hmm... but perhaps at a seam I coudl simply lace the sections together with elastic cord and have a section of rubber rings underneath it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaynLynx In reply to Marubaii [2006-11-23 23:26:36 +0000 UTC]

Hah hah! Oh, I understand all too well about trying to do something that turned out to be way too complicated to be worth doing in the first place. *laughing at myself*

Marubaii In reply to ChaynLynx [2006-11-25 04:15:42 +0000 UTC]

But is it not tha case that you still feel insanely proud of yourslef for accomplishing it, despite ending up with (in my case) something tha tI then couldn't even use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaynLynx In reply to Marubaii [2006-11-26 20:35:07 +0000 UTC]

Yup! *grin* I'm really pleased by finishing a piece, even if I end up taking it apart to rebuild it to scavenge for rings when I run short (which fortunately doesn't happen any more).

Thanks. I will need it. At the moment I have a chainmaille dragon about 1/3 done that I've laide aside to work on another one of these tops, but I will finnish that one before I start one with scale.

Opium01 In reply to Marubaii [2006-11-21 07:14:40 +0000 UTC]

holy cow! that'll look way cool! I can really appreciate the time that goes into something like this because I helped a friend with a 3x5 foot model of a dragon and each scale was cut out and welded onto the frame. Took months but the result is way cool! I'll have to keep an eye out for your new piece and see how it turns out. Good luck!

very well done! i love your incorperation of scalemale and chainmail details! just makes me wish even more that i had pics of the scalemail i made and sold!
Leather will deffinatly help make it more comfertable, if you use smaller links later im told it is very.....stimulating.......
At certain sca fairs you dont need a merchants license, every august i merch at clinton which is the biggest ren fair in western nother america (12000 was thierbiggest year i hear)

Ans stimulating... yes, to a pont, but with the scale if you bend too much you get stabbed a bit.. and I am not that much of a massochist lol
I haven't looked to see if I do or do not for sure, but I think you do for the one in MN. If not, then I sure as hell will be selling them!
Right now I am working on a comission for one for a friend of mine in modeling.. it will certianly help get my name out there.

ChardwolfArmory In reply to Marubaii [2006-11-21 06:38:47 +0000 UTC]

if you take a file and round off the back a bit then it wont stab you, but you have to leave a raised spot or the scales will turn. so just take off 1/3 of the tip

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marubaii In reply to ChardwolfArmory [2006-11-21 06:41:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the tip.. but in all honesty I know I dont't have the patience to do that XP.. I'd die...
Maybe I'll just line it with a rather thin fabric...
