powerful indeed, powerful enough that the Federal German Army and about 20 other countries use either it or a NATO-ammo version to this day.

Technically the MG 3 is not a copy, but the successor. It is indentical to the original design, except a different breech block that keeps the weapon from getting faster and faster with contiuing fire (the old MG 42 got so hot that the barrels melted and could only be fired for a realtively short period of time before you had to change the barrel).
And yes, the MG 42 (and MG 3) it is a very powerfol weapon, but it has many drawbacks that get ignored in most games or movies:
The recoil is so hard, you cannot fire the weapon without a solid foundation for your bipod. If you do not hold the MG 3 correctly, the recoil will break your collarbone like it is nothing. So, without the tripod or a car (or tank) mount you can only fire very short bursts (about 3-5 shots), the rest is automatically out of target, because of the enormous muzzle climb and wasted therefore just wasted ammo, unless you want to cover areas bigger than a house.
Also, something that almost never gets mentioned,Β the MG 3 (and the MG 42) is heavy as hell - the weapon alone weighs 15 kilos, the ammo weighs about 0,01 kilos per shot and you to carry easily 500-600 shots (making an additional 5 to 6 kilos). I was an MG 3 gunner at the German army - one day I weighed my whole gear (helmet, gun, vest, ammo, etc) and it came up to 52 kilos. So whenever I see someone in a game running around with an MG 3 (Battelfield 3 had one), I have to laugh, because I imagine some 14-something year old kid with my old gear trying to stand up, let alone fire the gun.

Actually you're right, most MGs especially with hundreds rounds per magazine is heavy, big recoil (depends on its caliber) and quickly overheat. That's what most FPS gamers don't pay attention and that's why I always watch and learn videos about recoil management, good position to shoot a gun, basics of a gun, what should I do if the gun jams, profile of a gun and gun recoil fails (hilarious but it gives a valuable lesson), guns absolutely more than just pulling the trigger. I even saw someone play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 carrying a M240 damn that gun is bulky, heavy and absolutely low mobility. Because of that I thought: "you can sit and shoot but let see until you shoot a real gun"

I know how it feels when carrying a full gear, dozens kilos of equipments, and the gun. It is really fun when firing a gun but the joy won't last for long since after shooting the recruits must collect all the disposed casings. And what you say about I don't want to live through any kind of battles makes me not so sure is it a must I've to join the US army just because I can kill people and hold a gun all the time
