Description Even your precious 1st and 2nd generations.

I could make a stamp on how every generation has some lame designs, but I won't. Instead, I will continue my little name rant.

Yes. Some of the 5th gen have lame names. You will get used to them. The 4th gen has some silly names too, we know that.

But how about acknowledging that the first two/three gens have some silly and unoriginal names too. I've never seen anyone complain about how silly some 1st gen names sound (possibly because you are used to them). Ninetales, Persian and Electrode sound pretty damn unoriginal. Weedle, Krabby, Mr. Mime all sound silly to me. Just to name a few there.

What about the 2nd gen? Bayleef? Hoothoot? Flaaffy?

But no one cares. We were young when these came out, we didn't care then, we got used to them and we don't care now. Perhaps because most of us are older these new English names sound silly. Either way, A lot of PokΓ©mon names sound lame in the previous generations. We're just used to them, so we don't really care, nor take notice.

So yes. Every generation has PokΓ©mon with stupid sounding names. Get used to the new gen's names and move on.

What I don't like is that they translate the names. It makes them harder to look up.

Rapidash, Seel, Muk, I could go on with how unoriginal a lot of Gen 1's names are.

The Japanese names probably sound just as silly for Japanese speakers. XD

Yeah, same goes for the Japanese names. Guess what Magmar is? BOOBER! And that's a 1st gen. Pokemon.

I don't really pay attention to the names, I accept them the way they are, but I pay attention to the pokemon themselves.

HausofChizuru [2011-10-04 18:22:45 +0000 UTC]

Agreed.

The only 5th Gen name I truly do not like, and probably will never get over, is "Servine." Yes, I see what they were going for, but "cervine" (pronounced the same way in English, but not in ANY other language) is an actual English word meaning "deerlike." The people who design Pokemon names are usually well-aware of Latin roots and all that. Misspelled wordplays I can handle. Servine strikes me as a banana peel their creative team slipped on.

Oh the woes of having a pidgin language that draws from every single tongue out there.

i agree with this, but the japanese names are pretty silly too, actually. examples:
hypno - sleeper
articuno - freezer
umbreon - blackie

I noticed that about the Japanese names as well. They can be even more silly than the English names.

Thank god its not only me who thinks this. I mean c'mon, Scraggy? Is this the best they could do? Its my favorite 5th gen pokemon, but pokemon as a whole have some pretty uninventive names.

Ohman, so true. I'm tired of people bitching about 5th gen in general.

Some people I know were especially annoyed at Purrloin.. but apparently they had no idea "purloin" is a real word and that's where it came from. |D They were assuming purr + loin. Fail.

AnistarNinfia In reply to Celliwig [2015-03-17 01:19:30 +0000 UTC]

But Purrloin isn't even a lion. D:Β

All of the bitching is getting on my nerves.

When I found out about Purrloin's name I also found out about the word "purloin". I can see where it'd be confusing, but people should do their research.
