Description I've continued to work on the map of my world, Vahl. I initially intended to create a political map, but instead I just added labels. I am not all that great with coming up with names, so I cheated and just translated words that had some connection (sometimes loosely) to whatever I was labeling. If you can read German or Finnish, do not look closely at the names on this map, you will almost certainly be disappointed. (I think if you translated one name, it would come out as "Channel Channel" which is truly inspired, I know...)Β

Anyways, hopefully it is worth a look, and I appreciate any comments you may leave...

Great job on the climate shading. I also really like the compass rose. To really take your mapping to the next level, I'd suggest working on making your mountains sharper and adding rivers. I also like the curved label you have; it could help to do more custom sizing and shaping of the labels. I find Inkspace to be an excellent tool for shaping and sizing labels. I also suggest turning down the opacity of your labels to allow the viewer to see more of the underlying terrain.

All in all, this is a very good map. Have a llama.

I agree with your comments. Β As far as the mountains, this is my second attempt to make them just as you suggest, somehow they keep coming out rounded. I'll likely give it another attempt in the future, but I'm working on other aspects of the world right now. There were, in fact, more rivers in the beginning, but they got kind of lost in the coloring, something else to work on, too. Labels, I've tried many different options attempting to balance readability and unobtrusiveness, as you noted, I am still working on that.

And thank you for your comment.

I'm not sure what software you use, but in GIMP, there's a useful function under "Colors" called "Curves". Playing around with that, you should be able to help sharpen up those mountains. Try googling "Eriond Tutorial" for some good tricks on mountains.

I used ForgetDeny 's tutorial in his Map sub-gallery for much of what you see here. (I don't think you'll find it in the main gallery.)

that translating works, for example: on one of my maps I had this area "thunder stepps", using google translate i made it "Deel Onkod" i think it was Somali or something. Β Or "Dhahabu Savannah", Swahili for golden Savannah. Buhangin for sand, Baybayin for shore (both in Tagalog). and DΓΊnland (old english) for hill land. coming up with names is a lot easier this way .
nice map anyway.

Google Translate is precisely the tool I used. And thank you.

Thank you, the islands were an element I wanted to include from the very beginning.Β

Looks great! Give it the ideal of an EXTREME Flood or a massive Earthquake that separated it from the land itself.

Keep them coming.
