Description Finally, here is the completed map of my fantasy world. The physical characteristics are meant to be exact as far as every mountain ridge, valley, and river branch. I didn't use any cartography software, so it's all painted digitally down to a two pixel brush where necessary for details. For the cities, those represented with all caps are independent city states. Together they form the free trade cities. The cities represented by the eight pointed star are the capitals of whichever region they are in. All other cities noted with the circle symbol are simply the other large cities of the world with populations over 150,000.
As far as terrain, I tried to make it fairly intuitive. The grayer areas with snow on them are mountains. Darker greens are forested areas. The variations correlate with the type of forest; very dark green is more coniferous, while the brighter greens represent more deciduous trees. The paler/grayish greens are typically more of a grassland or steppe, except in the mountains where they represent alpine tundra terrain. Browns and reds are desert areas with little vegetation. The major rivers are marked by the dark green tributary trees. To see the map without borders and labels covering up anything check it out here: [link]
You will certainly need to download the the whole thing to get the full experience.

What program did you use to make this? I'm looking to make something similar.

I just used Corel Painter Essentials 3 and my Wacom tablet. I did about 99% with just an airbrush affect and the other 1% with a blending stump effect because it cutout the fuzzy edges. Most decent photo editing programs from Gimp to Photoshop will have the same or similar brush options. If you don't have the tablet, though, it might be pretty hard to do the same way. You could try it though.

Awe, such a well-painted map!

For a short moment I was tempted to ask you if you take commissions (for points or money I mean). On the other hand, asking someone else to paint me a map of my own fantasy world wouldn't make any sense before I have added all places of interest and calculated the distances. (I'd love to do it myself anyway: the creator's pride if you know what I mean.) Well, you should take it as a compliment anyway.

Now, back to my drawing practice (note to myself: work on a map, work out distances and city populations).

Thank you so much for sharing this!

Thank you very much. That really means a lot. I think I know what you mean about the creator's pride though. These things can have a very personal aspect to them. At least for me anyway, the details of placement can also be very significant to the stories within the world. It's hard for someone else to get that stuff just right. Hope you have fun with it. If you should change your mind, I'd be open to a commission or art trade or something too.

You are welcome.

My own fantasy world is growing as my main characters travels through it. It might happen that I will have to change travel distances while editing the stories. Also new towns and villages appear from time to time. So making a map wouldn't make much sense at the moment.

That is beautifully painted and thought out. I need to come out with a map for my own world, but I really doubt it'll look anywhere near as amazing as this. Your detail is gorgeous, and honestly, I like your taste in names for your areas. This really looks nicer than many fantasy game and book maps. Great job!

Thank you very much. It means a lot. This is actually the first map I've ever painted. I usually just use the ole graphite and paper, so I'm glad it turned out so well. The technique for this style of map was actually pretty simple, but very time consuming because I wanted a certain attention to detail and placement. You could probably do something very similar for your own world map if you have corel painter(what I used), photoshop or anything remotely similar. I could give you a few tips if you'd like to try it the way I did it. There is also a lot of cartography software out there, but I've never used it so I don't know much about it. It can be used used to make some good looking maps though. [link] And again, thank you very much.

Well, I'm working on some history/information type stuff for the fantasy world. I'm not trying to rush it or anything though. I prefer to work on the visual art more than the written most of the time. I'd like to post a character or concept for each nation on the map eventually. I haven't been feeling the scifi much lately, so it might be a while before I add anything new on that side.
