Description After a failed attempt to make it to this spot by sunset three days prior, we decided to head back for one more shot. To our shock, it had snowed since our last visit, and the landscape had completely changed. The dead grasses of the field were replaced by a fresh blanket of snow, and many parts of the creek had frozen over already.

We arrived just in time for a nice sunset, and stayed long enough for our toes to freeze!

Liberty Bell Group near Washington Pass
North Cascades Highway, WA

I also wanted to share Addam's shot from the evening...I was incredibly jealous because he was tall enough to jump the creek and get to this vantage point.

Thanks so much, Michael! It definitely ranks up there in the top ten of my own favorites as well.
I'm sure you both would love it up there. I love the diversity of the landscapes up there - so much to choose from!

You're a great photographer LeeAnne!   I loved the North Cascades...sooo majestic and sooo beautiful!!   It's been quite a few years since I've been there, but I'll never forget it. Here's a few shots I took up there. They're not that great, since I was just new to digital photography and learning my camera.

Cool! Do you know which waterfall that might have been?

Oh, okay! I know where that is. That was the first waterfall we stopped at when Addam first took me up to the North Cascades. I didn't photograph it though because the sun was out. So glad you were able to get a shot when you went up!

I'm going back here one day...I mean to the whole area of the North Cascades.
Now that I know digital photography better and now that I have my full-frame DSLR, I want to spent 3-4 days up there.
One day I will.

The colors in the clouds and the way they softly blend into each other is breathtaking, and a lovely, soft counterpoint to the harsh sharpness of the rocky peak, giving a softness and warmth that makes this scene more warm and welcoming. The reflection is crisp and beautiful, and the snow covering the ground and spotting the trees and the mountain give this a rich contrast and also emphasizes the colors of the sunset by turning the landscape itself into a simple, non-competing black-and-white. Beautiful capture--I'm so glad you went back to try for a sunset shot one more time!

slowdog294 In reply to LAlight [2014-12-15 04:57:37 +0000 UTC]

Well, it is some dang fine editing then, because the highlight to shadow range along with color saturation and balance is perfectly natural here, just as the eye would see things, which is something a camera seldom gets right at the raw image stage. It must have taken only a few small tweaks to get this result, which beautifully displays very wide dynamic range and color gamut. Excellent work, my friend.

LAlight In reply to slowdog294 [2014-12-17 05:21:22 +0000 UTC]

Well thank you, I appreciate that. So glad to hear all of that!
My camera is fortunately pretty good at the shadow/highlight dynamic range, which I'm thankful for, because I'm not talented enough to combine exposures like a lot of people do!

I love modern digital camera technology for that reason. I do like to go to manual mode, though...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LAlight In reply to slowdog294 [2014-12-17 19:40:57 +0000 UTC]

Yep! I only ever shoot in manual. I'm too much of a control freak to do otherwise.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

slowdog294 In reply to LAlight [2014-12-17 23:30:11 +0000 UTC]

In the field, auto mode will save one's bacon. Also, computers can fix a host of imaging ills as long as the focus is tight and the ISO is not too high for the sensor in question. However, I love shooting in manual mode when I actually have the luxury and time to do so. Most of my field images are rather spontaneous. I usually have no time to set up for the frame. I have to walk through there framing stuff in my eye in a feeble attempt to get it on the card like I saw it in real life as I raise my gadget to shoot. Dang, no matter what mode used, that is a really hard thing to do, especially out in black bear country!

The vibrant colors in the sky and the coolness of the snow, separated by that wonderful line of trees, with a rugged peak and it's reflection, adding up to a fine image. Hope your toes have warmed up.
