Description Hime Martin's mother had lived a happy life, but got cancer in her forties and died shortly after. Her days were full of comfort and close family and friends all the way until the end (despite the pain), but there was one thing that still bothered her. The day before she died, Sherry Martin confided to her daughter that when she was younger, she had been madly in love with a local boy in the little town she grew up in on the borders of the human and monster realm. He was the kind of rough-around-the-edges, but totally ambitious guy that young girls fall for. Unfortunately, the day after she'd asked him to go out with her, he disappeared from town without giving her an answer. Though she didn't regret how things turned out, she still wonders to this day where he went and how his life turned out.
After her mother's funeral, Hime dug up her mother's old photo albums and (without telling her father) took off for her mother's hometown. Over the years the town has had more monsters move in, and is one of the towns actively working on sweetening the relations between the monsters and humans. However, moving closer to the monster realm means that many electronics begin going on the fritz, so it's a bit more old-fashioned the closer you get. Upon reaching this crazy, eclectic town full of werewolves, vampires, animal folk, and more (though there's still a majority of humans), Hime is delighted to hear that this "Jared Touya" that her mother loved long ago has a residence on the outskirts of the town.
Approaching the house and finding no one home, she tries the door and is about to peek in when a man wearing a fox mask sitting on the roof comments that she's being totally rude.
"What honest person tries to open a door that doesn't belong to them without permission?"
"It's not like I was going to go in, and besides shouldn't you have answered when I asked if anyone was here?"
He leaps down and appraises her. "I haven't seen you around before. You're not a vampire, else you wouldn't have left the town's solar covering." (a magical covering that allows vampires to walk under the sun) "What do you want here?"
"I'm looking for Jared Touya."
"Yeah. So what do you want?"
"Are you really Jared Touya?"
The man removes his mask, and to her surprise, Hime sees a man not much older than the man in the picture. Definitely not a man in his forties. "What the heck, there's no way you're my mom's age!"
"... who the hell are you?"
"I'm Hime Martin, the daughter of Sherry Louis." (maiden name)
"!" Cue jaw drop.

From left to right:
Jared Touya -
A man who was kidnapped and turned into a vampire but managed to slay the sadistic bit** that did it to him and turn back. (in this verse, a vampire is a separate race. one is either born as a vampire or must undergo a simple ritual to become one.) Because this makes him immune to vampire glamour, and he's been left with super strength and ridiculously quick rejuvenation, he is often sought after as a go between for various factions in town. Other side effects of his former vampirism are the ability to see in the dark and glowing red eyes, as well as the more obvious longer-term youth and slightly extended lifespan. Jared just wants to be left alone, but his usefulness and (albeit unwilling) helpfulness keep everyone coming to him for help from serious criminal disputes to trivial gardening issues.
He loved Hime's mother, but was kidnapped when he was walking around at night to think about how he should answer her. Now, though he is still rather strongly fond of Sherry, he admits that it might be because she represents the life he could have had. He reveals later that Sherry had named Hime from a nickname he had given her in the past.
Hime calls him a grumpy old man, though he doesn't look his age.

Hime Martin -
Though often mistaken for a young boy, Hime is a 17 year old girl. She's become resigned to the fact that the only thing that's grown were her legs. Rambunctious, impetuous, and very strong willed, Hime has forced herself into Jared's home and livens things up around him whether he wants it or not. Jared is fiercely protective of her, at first out of duty to Sherry, but then ... ... ... ? He gets her a white ash bat to keep the vamps off her - 'cause she's a virgin and a very healthy young woman so her blood's more alluring than others. (Or should I do hawthorn or oak? I'm never sure which wood to go with when it comes to countermagic. White ash sounds more magical I guess.)
Jared at first can't believe she's Sherry's child due to her rough personality (Sherry acted like a princess, hence Jared nicknamed her "hime"), and the fact that Sherry had very ample curves. :3

Lucrezia -
A cheerful vampire under Alda who becomes close friends with Hime.

Alda -
The societal leader of the vampires, Alda is a huge tease and loves both sex and blood. She is a huge reason that this town is as peaceful as it is. While most monster towns have a lot of infighting - between vamps and werewolves, vamps and humans, etc etc etc - Alda is only territorial towards other invasive vampires. The vampires she rules over are all those who wish to coexist with other races, and troublemakers are always punished, and in extreme cases, kicked out of town or, in extremer cases, killed. Because of this, there are a lot more human/vampire lovers in this town than others; most of them beginning as symbiotic relationships becoming much more. She relies on(or actually, pushes) Jared into helping her wrangle the vampires' problems.
Though, as other vampires, she has a distaste for werewolves, her ideals are that SHE and HER kind will never start the trouble. As the werewolves kind of feel the same way, the racial tension is released in very mature (sarcasm) bouts of name calling, taunting, and challenges to fights that rarely follow through. They are always polite enough to other races to take any instances of physical violence out of the town. It also kind of helps that she has this weird love-hate relationship with the brawny leader of the werewolves that has often confusingly lead to bed-relations. Neither really knows what the hell to think of it. Against any threat to their town, though, the werewolves and vampires are quick to work together - usually.

Kind of inspired by the anime Karin. Or rather, Karin helped me get over my distaste for vampires by giving me a chance to look at them as a completely separate race from humans. It's a lot easier for me to understand than them being undead.
