I've just re-read one of my favorite webcomics in history, IoM, for like the fourth time, and realized I never even thought to ask you - why did you ever stop updating it? Is there a particular reason? I loved creative and well-researched plot arcs and especially the vast diversity of characters.

There were a lot of plot foibles that, while I was doing well to disguise how bad they were, i was getting to a point where I couldn't hide the bad plots. I haven't decided if I'm going to completely abandon it, but there's a lot of stories in there that weren't worth fixing.
EDIT: and also, time. there' was a lot of that missing too

That's a shame to hear, I too read IofM and loved it. Yes it was a bit hard to follow sometimes (mostly when I was exhausted but just had to keep reading lol) but I loved the story lines and would be delighted if you picked it back up sometime. Β Seth's storyline is particularly interesting to me.

I wonder how long it'll be before we start seeing actual English releases of light novels that've gotten anime versions.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

klinanime In reply to Sandtrap [2013-03-01 06:54:36 +0000 UTC]

Haruhi is already being translated....

To aru no Majutsu no Index next please!!!!
... I actually haven't the slightest for what publishers want to do with the light novels. They should probably continue to have an international publisher translate them, because what do we got? ... Viz. Tokyopop. Yeeeeeah.... I don't think I could bear reading light novel translations from THOSE.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sandtrap In reply to klinanime [2013-03-01 07:47:39 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, Tokyopop has done pretty well by a couple of their smaller runs... Like BLAME!.

Actually, mostly just BLAME!

I want the Bakemonogatari books. And SAO. I need to finish Nisemonogatari soon...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

klinanime In reply to Sandtrap [2013-03-01 09:05:21 +0000 UTC]

haha. Man, I bet you could find bakemonogatari translations online. Not SAO - yet, I reckon.

Much of SAO is already translated, as are a few monogatari series books.

Probably.

SAO and Bakemonogatari are two of my new favorite Anime... Thank you hulu, for (finally) letting me see this stuff.

Accel World is pretty nice too.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

klinanime In reply to Sandtrap [2013-03-01 09:31:24 +0000 UTC]

the same guy wrote SAO and Accel World. I'm not a huge fan, but that's just cause it's not my genre of choice. Never liked .Hack//Sign either. Meh. *shrugs*

Solid storytelling though

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sandtrap In reply to klinanime [2013-03-01 11:08:00 +0000 UTC]

Really? That does explain a lot... The common thread of reaction time over brute strength, for example.
I prefer the Augmented Reality of SAO/Accel World to the basic MMO structure of .Hack//.

Have you found anything with a similar sense of humor and overall tempo to Bakemonogatari?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

klinanime In reply to Sandtrap [2013-03-01 19:51:25 +0000 UTC]

Mononoke (not princess mononoke) and Mushishi are the two closest with the same type of vibe. Mononoke deals more with finding out the human reasons behind the strange monster behavior, while Mushishi is more about things that just are that humans don't know how to deal with.
Unfortunately, neither are really... comedic. But then, I didn't think Bakemonogatari was that comedic. Personally I thought Bakemonogatari was too talkative and I wish SHAFT hadn't royally f-ed up the little animation it had.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sandtrap In reply to klinanime [2013-03-02 08:16:20 +0000 UTC]

Being "comedic" and being "funny" are different things. And animation quality is nowhere near as important as being visually striking in what boils down to not an action anime.
I thought the whole tempo and presentation of Bakemonogatari is awesome because of how esoteric it is.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

klinanime In reply to Sandtrap [2013-03-02 18:28:23 +0000 UTC]

Um, no. Animation quality is super important even if you're not doing an action anime. I'm not criticizing the cool, idiosyncratic animation style SHAFT uses and their cutaways. It worked great in Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei and Hidamari Sketch. I'm talking about the fact that they were pretty understaffed and it kinda showed. I loved the first episode, got a little turned off with the paper cutouts they used in the next few ones, but when they got to Oshino talking for five minutes moving nothing but his lips - not even blinking - ...

And then the episode they let air without finishing half the scenes, opting to just put a black scene with "removed due to certain circumstances" with voices going over it... Though I don't know if they finished it for the DVD/which version Hulu's showing

At one point it stopped feeling artistic and started feeling - "shit, we're behind schedule." From what I understand, they were heavily understaffed and pushed Shinbo's animation style beyond the artistic limit to compensate, and almost failing to meet their production schedule anyway. They seem like they're doing alright now, but it didn't stop people from joking that the only reason they finished Madoka on time was due to the tsunami stalling air time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sandtrap In reply to klinanime [2013-03-02 18:45:56 +0000 UTC]

Admittedly, I think Madoka is still one of the most beautiful things ever made.

And animation quality matters a whole lot less when it's still in the top ten percent.

Then again, I think aside from the conspicuous and invasive CGI, that Rebuild of Evangelion (1.11 and 2.22) is one of the best-animated things I've ever seen.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

klinanime In reply to Sandtrap [2013-03-03 02:11:32 +0000 UTC]

haven't seen it yet. Not sure if I will choose to. Though I liked old Evangelion, Shinji always irked me, and I'm not sure I'll appreciate it a second time through.

Sandtrap In reply to klinanime [2013-03-03 13:18:07 +0000 UTC]

Rebuild Shinji is actually pretty cool, sometimes. Not Shinji & Warhammer 40k cool, but pretty cool.

klinanime In reply to Sandtrap [2013-02-04 22:52:47 +0000 UTC]

Naw, it was a cute story with a very stable moral, and fun characters. I will admit I got a lil' sidetracked and ended up watching something else, but it's definitely something i'd like to go back to later.

Hell, even if the rest of the cast were boring, Momiji would've been enough to keep me watching.

(Good timing, btw. Just put them up.)

I'm mostly focusing on finishing school and personal projects, so not too much time to do requests and commissions, and I hate not getting around to something I agreed to do for someone else.
