Description Still don't have my scanner at the moment, so my means of posting are kinda crude.  Anywho; today I have an original MH Monster design for the first time in a while: Quinkalos; the Dusk Runner Dragon.

Quinkalos are deadly Elder Dragons that roam the gloomy savannas and steppes of the New World.  Unlike a majority of Elder Dragons it's size, they lack wings of any sort, preferring to utilize their natural speed to pursue their prey and combat their foes.  While their razor-sharp teeth, claws, and spiked tail can make short work of other creatures, Quinkalos also expel a unique, pinkish energy from the vents on the side of their body and from their mouth.  Similarly to the Valstrax, though not quite as derived or to the same extent, Quinkalos can utilize these vents like tailpipes to propel itself with blinding speed.  These vents can also fire off blasts of the energy as a means of attack; allowing Quinkalos to broadside their opponents and bombard them with blasts.  When enraged; the golden stripes and markings on Quinkalos' body glow pink.

Quinkalos have the ability to inflict a unique ailment with this pink energy known as "Nyctblight".  When a hunter is afflicted with Nyctblight, Quinkalos can steal the effects of any consumables the hunter uses; for example:

Potions will restore health to Quinkalos
Antidotes will cure it's poisoning, if it has any
Demondrug will increase it's attack temporarily
Armorskin will increase it's defense temporarily
Nulberries will make it resistant to elemental damage temporarily
Dash Juice and Energy Drinks will increase it's speed temporarily
Hot drinks give it resistance to Ice Element temporarily
Cool Drinks give it resistance to Fire Element temporarily

In the regions where Quinkalos are sighted, they are vilified and feared in legend by the Grimalkynes; where they refer to the dragon as the "Night Reaver", ready to snatch up anyone who dares wonder too far out into it's territory at night.  Terrifyingly enough, the sounds of Quinkalos make it sound like a young child or small animal, believed to fool it's prey into believing it to be harmless.  It's roar sounds like the blood curdling scream of a human woman.

Quinkalos Bio:

Title:  Dusk Runner Dragon

Monster Type:  Elder Dragon

Elements:  N/A

Ailments:  Stun, Nyctblight, Bleeding (certain attacks when enraged, involving it's claws or tail)

Weakest to:  Ice

Weakness Sign:  Limping, Dulled vents

Habitats:  Darkwood Savanna

Monster Size:  Large

Monsters in Relation:  Valstrax(?)

Trivia:  Quinkalos' design and name is based on the Quinkan; strange beings depicted in Ancient Australian Aboriginal rock art.  Overall, Quinkalos is meant to have an Aboriginal Australian motif to it's appearance.  It's weapons, currently being designed by me, have a similar motif (Ehem, didgeridoo Hunting Horn anyone?).

Monster Hunter is owned by Capcom.  Original monster design by me.

Well, that is a badass dragon alright. But it doesn't scream "force of nature", it's the more "unknown monster" kind of mysterious like Chamelos has.

Thank you!

Yeah, that's what I would say.  Quinkalos doesn't cause extreme change or damage to the environment quite like other Elder Dragons like Kushala or Teostra, and it's much more of a physical attacker.

He certainly comes from a land down under.  Where the Elder Dragons glow AND plunder.

Holy crap, this is absolutely fantastic!
Is this done in markers? The coloration looks so smooth and uniform and it has this soft quality to it which I quite like

Thanks!  That it is!  Without access to my tablet and scanner at the moment, markers are my best friend.  Having this new phone helps too; sure, the capture quality here isn’t the GREATEST, but it could be worse lol

He’s a dapper dragon for sure; all the browns and gold stripes; perfect for the savanna.

Anytime!
I honestly couldn’t tell that he picture was taken with a phone cam, the quality’s great.
But I really have to compliment this coloration again, it looks absolutely beautiful. The color scheme you picked definitely looks very fitting for an animal from the savannah... I also really like the Aboriginal-esque coloration and patterns

The aboriginal theme is very apparent in his equipment too; his weapons in particular.  One thing I love about the weapons of MH is theming; Teostra weapons have a royal theme, Kushala Daora weapons are all modeled after animals, Chameleos weapons have an Arabic/Indian theme, etc.  I think an Aboriginal Australian theme has been long overdue.

Agreed! Australia gets left out in a lot of scifi and fantasy media anyways so it’s cool to see something inspired by it

Alive but barely, lol.  Signed a contract with the Devil that states I'll have to keep drawing until I fall right back in that grave that was so graciously dug for me.

Thanks, glad ya like him!

Oh...in that case, I actually have a grave that actually have a plasma widescreen tv, a PS4 and XBox1 with the most recent games!

Of course I like him, elder dragons are actually great creatures in the Monster Hunter games!

This is genius man! I would love to see this guy (and especially his gear and nyctblight) in any monster hunter installment, is this going to be a continued series?

King-Edmarka In reply to Demoman20 [2018-08-07 17:30:11 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!

I would like it to be.  I mean, as I speak, I'm designing his gear (going to include a weapon in each category).  I've designed other original MH designs in the past; my most notable one being the Torronyx; a Spinosaurus-inspired Brute Wyvern.  Others included the Bitilisk; a viper-inspired Snake Wyvern, and the Phobotchu; a mammalian leviathan.  The Torronyx and Bitilisk I'll probably remake, but the Phobotchu is going to be scrapped (it had a lot of similar features to the Mizutsune, but I DID design it before Generations was even announced at the time).

In addition to those, I've also conceptualized an Aztec-inspired Elder Dragon, and have also thought about the potential of a Rhinoceros-like Fanged beast and a Centipede monster.  So, yeah, I'll have more to show you guys.

Thank you!

I'm usually happy either way.  On one hand, I love whenever they bring back monsters, but I also welcome new ones.  I feel there's a few monsters in particular they should have brought back for World; namely perhaps Tigrex and Zinogre, but seeing new monsters always makes me excited (though with World, it DOES disappoint me how they really missed out on making tons of unique looking weapons for the new additions; like Kulve Taroth).

It's a good bet where getting zinogre since the behemoth has a very similar skeleton to him, and I would love to get an snow map with tigrex, zamtrios, zinogre, maybe gammoth.

Absolutely!  Definitely need a Snow map for the future.  And for that matter, more Ice monsters for World; it doesn't really give anybody much incentive to work against Ice element when all we have at the moment is Legiana to employ ice attacks.
