Description
Union Landship 1868
After the heavy defeat of the Union army at the 3rd Battle of Manassas in 1867, Grant realized the North had to start taking the lumbering Confederate War Wagons seriously. He ordered the development of a similar but superior war machine to counter the threat.
By Christmas 1868 a Pennsylvanian shipbuilding company had built the first prototype, (With some assistance from European engineers). It was called the Landship, and it impressed Grant and the generals enough to order immediate production, which began in mid-1869.
It took months to overcome the mechanical and armament issues that plagued the first heavily armed and armored behemoths but they eventually entered the interminable civil war that was tearing the nation apart, and made their presence felt.
The Landships were indeed superior to the Confederate War Wagons but limited numbers and constant breakdowns and problems with the traction drive slowed their progress. But as these issues were resolved the southern armies began a slow retreat against the mechanized onslaught.
Union forces began their sweep into the Great Plains.

I'm surprised that nothing like this was actually built during the ACW. Steam-powered road vehicles were nothing new at the time. I guess that it would have had to have a coal and water tender towed behind it.
