Description The Incitatus. 'Agrippa Class' Railed Steamer

Built at the dawn of the Second Republic, the 'Agrippa' series steam engines are generally credited with starting the rail transport system, that by 1322 would grow to cover the Empire.

Although initially the first rail line, Rome-Brundisium, was meant solely as a means for the Legions to move equipment for shipping east, across the Mediterranean, it didn't take long for private industries to see the benefit of the new haulage system.

As the rail network expanded to accommodate commercial and public interests, the Agrippa, with it's limited carriage capacity (Usually only 4 or 5 cars) was replaced by more powerful and reliable engines (Most notably the giant 'Caesar' series which would haul entire legions to break the siege at Constantinople in the province of Byzantium, and push the Ottoman armies under Mehmet II out of all the Anatolian lands) The Agrippas were gradually relegated to obscure northern frontier lines. Their pivotal role in the developement and growth of the Roman Empire rail network, was generally ignored, or worse, forgotten.

The 'Incitatus' was the last of her class. .

Having all the ingredients for it, had the Romans been just a little less dependent on slave labor, they could have easily produced the steam engine more than a millenia before its eventual arrival. I like your take on a surviving empire.
