Description i just finished this today. i'm pretty happy with it although it could definitly use a little refining. i think she's famous although i can't think of what her name is...
i got a little lazy on the hair. usually i draw basically each little part individually but this time i sorta blacked the whole thing in and went to work with my eraser.
the shading on the face(in the photo) wouldn't show up as dark as it is on the original, although that could also use some work.
well, there it is. i think i'm mostly just glad i finally finished something. if unfinished drawings were money i'd be a millionaire lol.
anyways tell me what you think! comments and critiques are always good. i critique other people's artwork, it's only fair i let you guys do the same. thanks for looking!

its almost perfect photo like quality in a drawing.

If you hadnt of got lazy with the hair as you said it would of of been there.

What can I say.. I havn't finished a portrait in years I stick to 5 min sketches thats enough for me these days.

2 Things the hair top right doesnt match the quality of the rest of the image and the shading on the neck is a little out in depth (im bad for that to).. apart from that you could pass it off as a photoshoped photograph its that good.

I love the contrast you used! it really works. I always block in hair, I'm of the opinion you don't need to draw every strand. Lots of pencil artists use erasers to "draw" the highlights and small strands. It sure beats leaving negative space, which is pretty hard to be consistent with.

if I had to critique anything, I'd say just finish the right side where her eye and eyebrow run into her hair.

really nice work! now let's see some more... haha!!!

thanks. contrast is everything, but i don't need to tell
you that do i. i think i'll probably continue to block in hair
but maybe not so dark, that way i can pull hilights out easier,
then i'll darken around them.
and yeah, that area could use some work.
and don't worry, i think my "art block" is gone now lol.

stick around dA long enough and you should find something to keep your art going...

I really like blocking in hair, although I do it really dark sometimes (depends on hair color/lighting) but it's easy for me to pull light strands out w/white charcoal.

reminds me of Jennifer Connelly in her younger days.
looks good.. also blows me away how well you manage to them to scan so well, I find a lot of times I really have to screw with them in photoshop as the scanner tends to blow out the highs to much. and then I lose alot of the detail in the rendering trying to pull the level back. Curious what are you drawing on?

kc7655 In reply to SiteLine6 [2008-09-09 22:19:28 +0000 UTC]

actually i photograph them.
i'd kill to have a scanner, the flash always
takes away some of the shading.
either scanner or camera i don't think it's
ever the same as if you see it in real life.
i always feel a little ripped off when i post
i'm drawing on strathmore medium. it's the yellow
tablet for charcoal.

Ya I know what mean about being ripped off.. that's part of the reason I don't post that much pencil drawings.... that and these days I just don't have the time to spend on them.. it's not uncommon for them to take up to 6 months for me to complete .. it's so off and on for me with them.. work a little bit on them , put it down and don't get back to it for months on end.
I'll have to try paper.. sure seems to work good for you!

another question---- what size is this?? big or small it still looks great

kc7655 In reply to glasspencil [2008-09-09 22:17:05 +0000 UTC]

i think the paper is... 14"x22"(i'm probably way off, but that's pretty close)
i didn't use the whole peice. her face is probably...12-14" tall.
i think... maybe.... i have no idea lol.
apparently i'm no good at estimating.

i use general's paper wrapped charcoal pencils.
and strathmore medium(it's the yellow one, that's glue bound).
and thanks!

Wow, I really can't critique this xD ... um, her nose seems a little lopsided and maybe it needs more shading, but I don't know how the picture looked. But this looks really nice; I like the contrast. :3

kc7655 In reply to YYHyasha [2008-09-09 02:32:05 +0000 UTC]

thanks hyasha, yeah you might be right.
it could probably use more shading on the
face, and i think the shading on the bridge of
her nose needs to be redone, that might be the
prob. also the nostrils might need straightening
