I'd like to know how you do the shading too because my ink portraits don't look anything like yours.

How did you do the shading without cross-hatching?

yes it's a ballpoint pen drawing.
and yes, it was tedious lol. the most frustrating part is working for 4 hours and seeing almost no progress. oh well, i'm always glad when i'm done! thanks for the kind words.

any favorite papers that you have that work well with the ball point pen

printer paper works well actually.
for finished drawings i have been using bristol vellum. it's thick and won't bend easily. ink goes on smooth too. they make a bristol smooth which probably works great, but i haven't tried it yet.

one other question--- what's the size of this drawing?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
kc7655 In reply to glasspencil [2010-02-12 06:59:24 +0000 UTC]
it's on 14x17". i didn't use up the whole paper though, i would guess about 12x15".

very nice for sure--- I've done some work with bb pens and it's nice to find one that will go lightly with you.... and one that can be predictable when you are using it...
what brand or model of bic pen are you using... I'd like to try this one as it seems to work well in the light mode.
once again good job.

kc7655 In reply to glasspencil [2010-02-12 06:57:23 +0000 UTC]
for me the only pens to use are bic pens. i use the "round stic" model with the opaque body. there are other models of bic pens but i'm not sure how well they work. i do know that i would never trust papermate pens on a 30+ hour drawing though. it's a lot better to pay 50 cents extra. one piece of advice that i had to learn the hard way is to use a piece of scratch paper to scribble on if you take a break even for a few seconds, pens clog easily and it sucks getting a black streak on top of delicate shading you've spent a lot of time on.

thanks a lot for that info. I like to draw with pens a lot but haven't found one that I liked that much. I'll buy a pack and try it again. thanks

so i love this, but question, is it really fine pointalism and lines, or is it all just shading with the pen?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
kc7655 In reply to KateMae [2010-02-12 01:38:11 +0000 UTC]
it's very light lines. i'm basically barely touching the paper with the pen so it leaves a slight gray line rather than black.
