Very nice background I must say. The sun and the way you centered Ash in the picture blends in greatly with one another.

Wouldn't say the background is that crappy, you just need to add some details to the stone. What i do like about the background is the atmosphere, it has it's unique touch to it, the only things i'm not really sure about is if you really should color the character, cause he's red, and the background is red, they might blend together too much and the character might become lost...Although it's not for me to decide, if you can do it - do it for sure, i know that you never submit bad looking pictures to dA.
