Description Another image of my two Pleistocene Eurasian hominids, Korowo the Cro Magnon and Na'andin the Neanderthal. Or Crowe and Andy in their rather "meh close enough" approximations in their own languages. In-story, Crowe was injured and Andy was separated from his family, and the two ended up taking refuge in a cave while making awkward observations of one another. When creating these characters I tried to be as accurate as I can, especially when it came to clothing. Obvious inspirations were the portrayal of Ice Age hominids in Walking with Beasts, as well as the artwork of various artists here on DeviantArt. Crowe's name is a soundalike to an old PBS edutainment show and its title character, also a Cro Magnon who ended up living with Neanderthals.

Of course, my depiction of Neanderthals and Cro Magnons here is a lot less unsophisticated than that used in the show. Andy doesn't look like a simpleton and actually wears more or less full clothing, whereas Crowe wears full clothing that isn't just a glorified loincloth. Indeed I am actually tantalized at how similar stone-age clothing is to tunics from the Middle Ages and, to a lesser extent, clothes we have today. In-story, any differences between them are either based on real life differences between Cro Magnon and Neanderthal cultures or differences specific to their own tribes.

I added fletching to Crowe's spear and gave him a satchel. It is implied that his spearthrower is inside the satchel.

A bit about them: Andy is in his 30s and is the chief hunter for his family. He has a mate and a child entering her late teens and is considered in advanced middle age (Neanderthals are considered to be old in their 40s). He's softspoken and fatherly. Crowe is a young hunter about the age of 19, a bit reckless and inexperienced, but very clever.

Nice designs! I would say they are pretty accurate to the cultures they represent.

As far as Stone Age clothing goes, I tend to imagine it would vary with climate. Obviously people in warmer parts of the world, such as Africa and Oceania, would need less coverage than people living in Crowe's neighborhood. I agree with you that a fur tunic makes sense for Crowe and his culture.

Thanks for the feedback.

I also agree in that peoples from southerly climates would have markedly different clothing even in the Pleistocene, especially in warmer climes. A(n elaborate) loincloth plus a lot of body paint would probably be more than sufficient in those places. It starts making less sense if the depictions were set in temperate climates outside the summer; having just a cloak and not a shirt of some kind during the middle of Pleistocene winter is not going to cut it.
