So, they surrounded the electric guy with rock types. Yeah, I think Vermilion City is secretly sending you a message.

Actually, it makes perfect sense. When you know Koga uses Poison-type Pokemon, what's the first Pokemon you're going to send out into battle against his Gym's Trainers? Most likely a Pokemon that is NOT well-equipped for taking on some random Hypno at the very start of the Gym.

The only exception I can think of is Drayden/Iris. But, then again, you CAN catch a vanillish or vanilluxe by then.

That, and apparently, steel-types like Pawniard/Bisharp are resistant to dragon-type attacks. :3 I was pleasantly surprised to learn that~

It's just a big coinkydink that there's a bunch of Timburr, Throh, and Sawk near a Normal-type Gym, ain't it?

Plus you get given a coloured monkey that just happens to be super effective against whichever of the first gym leaders you face XD I got the red one (I forgot his name because I nicknamed him, so he's just Louis to me. Pansear?)

We were talking about super-effective PokΓ©mon that just happen to be in the area of the Gym Leader.
Starters don't count.

Haha, I made the mistake of deciding to nickname all my PokΓ©mon, so I ended up not very sure of some of the names afterwards. I remember everyone else's except Pansear and Simisear when he evolved XD
Agh, Wattson was so annoying! XD I think I had to evolve my Torchic to beat him

Haha I love how the games sometimes seem to be saying, "HINT. HINT!" The Route above Cerulean, which has a Grass-type, then Diglett's Cave. There are a bunch more but I can't think of them right now lol.
Oh! And in Yellow, with Mankey and Nidoran before Brock. Butterfree too.

very funny comic!

I remember Dig was also grossly overpowered back then (probably had the same power as Earthquake in Gen 1). A well trained Dugtrio with Dig could almost always sweep any NPC team, save flyers.

Start with Bulbasaur.
Great against Brock and Misty, resists electricity, immune to toxic against Erika and Koga, and wonderful against Giovanni.
It only really misses out against Sabrina and Blaine but by that point you'll have a water type anyway and Sabrina's pretty much fair game to pretty much anything but a poison or fighting type. Just get something with decent SP. Defence and speed and you're set.

Depends on what generation you're talking about, Gen 1 or the Gen 3 remakes?

BlondBeastBoy In reply to 1-800-Regicide [2013-04-24 00:54:18 +0000 UTC]
I forgot, isn't the Saur family capable of learning some ground-type moves as well? It would be stupid for Venusaur not able to learn Earthquake.
π: 0 β©: 1
1-800-Regicide In reply to BlondBeastBoy [2013-04-24 01:05:44 +0000 UTC]
Venusaur can indeed learn Earthquake. It's also got very decent Special Defence, which is great against fire-types where all their moves are special.

I like how the Gen 1 starters are so versatile. I wish the newer gen starters were like that. The closest one was Gen 4's where Torterra could get a STAB with a ground-type move against Infernape; Infernape's fighting-type can get a STAB against the Steel-typed Empoleon, and Empoleon can easily learn any ice-type move leveling up and inflict 4x damage against Torterra.

1-800-Regicide In reply to BlondBeastBoy [2013-04-24 01:47:40 +0000 UTC]
How were they versatile? Charizard got double the advantages against Venusaur and Blastoise couldn't do anything to Venusaur unless it had an ice-type move.
G4 probably is the most versatile when it comes to starter vs. starter.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlondBeastBoy In reply to 1-800-Regicide [2013-04-24 02:04:15 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, but G4 was basically G1 and G3 combined. A quadrupedal grass type too heavy to move and a fire-fighting type. The only innovative starter was Empoleon, although I don't get the relation between penguins and metal.
What I meant is that Charizard's dragon-like appearance made it versatile to learn Dragon moves and Steel Wing against the rock-types. Blastoise was also versatile. The most disappointing starters were Gen 2's.

What are you talking about? Penguins are totally metal.
But yeah, Meganium was useless as nuts.
