just for what it's worth, I grew up hunting buffalo and the females (or cows) don't grow horns and don't tend to grow as large as the males abou the size of the average horse.

Strongheart drops most of the weight during the annual stampede and AJ is constantly working. Not to mention he heard (wait, isn't AJ his cousin?) AJ likes a certain prismatic Pegasus of the dashing variety.

For some reason, I can't stand Braeburn and Little Strong heart together - maybe because I'm a fangirl for Braeburn -- but when I see this comic, I feel re-assured that it would never work between them.

Sure it could work between them, they're both fictional characters so they could literally be made for each other. 
Personally I don't mind the pairing. Of course, I really don't have a strong attachment to either character. But, for some reason I get a little upset if Big Macintosh is paired with anyone aside form Fluttershy.

It's funny I always thought it strongheart was a boy since girl buffalo's are cows. So I always thought my little pony added a gay couple. But this is like the third pic saying strongheart is a girl. But I must say I do like the pic.

Strongheart is voiced my the woman who does RD and AJ as well as having a slighter frame than the male buffalo in a female centered show. They never came out and said it one way or the other but it never occurred to me Strongheart could be a guy.

I always knew braveheart was voiced by a woman like how Spike is also voiced by the same woman who voices the mayor of ponyville.
I thought they gave her the smaller frame since that was the youngest buffalo and they wanted the romance angle.
It's only because of the fact that buffalo's are always boys and cows are always girls which the show has shown both to talk. That I just thought braveheart was a boy and it was the shows way of having a gay couple while avoiding all the hulabaloo they would get if they out right said it. I am now realizing how wrong I was especially in a show with talking ponies lol.

You are correct. For most mammals the males tend to be bigger. This is reversed in insects and reptiles with the female being the larger.
I've seen buffalo in the fields and can say they are about the same size. All the adults were bigger than most horse breeds.
