I actually like the way you put lines that looking like "slashing" those sentence, adding a nice detail rather than plain text.

So... basically, what buddha said is that nothing is true unless you believe it's true.

There's no other way to correct for wrong beliefs than to acknowledge that your current frame of mind can be wrong, and to critically analyze your own reasons and the reasons of others. I see this quote as an endorsement of confirmation bias - definitely not the wisest thing to come out of the Buddhist tradition.

"One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. it is simply too painful to acknowledge -- even to ourselves -- that we've been so credulous. (So the old bamboozles tend to persist as the new bamboozles rise.)" well since you dont agree with this it is not wrong as it says "not even if i have said it". So basically it says you can believe whatever you want. Sounds right to me.

Most of the time, common sense is wrong. Also, reason is often very difficult and I don't trust my own reason alone. I trust it in combination with other people's reason and knowledge and skill.
I would rather say "don't believe anything on the basis of who makes the claim." Just because someone makes a claim doesn't mean they are right, but it doesn't mean they are wrong either. That isn't the basis for belief. Belief ought to be based on evidence, and logic.

andwhyisit In reply to ToruKun1 [2012-05-15 01:34:20 +0000 UTC]
The opposing extreme is worse. There are more than enough sheep in this world that just blindly follow what others say. These are the people that take rumours as truth and wildly spread misinformation. Your own reason and common sense is ten times better than that, no matter how retarded it may be.

ToruKun1 In reply to andwhyisit [2012-05-15 02:12:02 +0000 UTC]
I dunno, I find blindly dismissing EVERYTHING that doesn't align with your "common sense" is just as intellectually lazy and/or dangerous as blindly accepting everything that's shoved down your throat.

andwhyisit In reply to ToruKun1 [2012-05-16 00:01:05 +0000 UTC]
Hey, I agree with you. Both extremes are bad. But the dismissive in this world don't cause as many problems as the sheep do. A stubborn minded individual is no match for a like minded group.
The best way is the middle ground. Don't dismiss something, take it in, but if you are not sure about something then mentally check it as unconfirmed. In other words if you aren't sure about something then don't state it as a confirmed truth. There is no reason to disregard any knowledge, regardless of what it might be.

VentAnger In reply to andwhyisit [2012-05-15 02:11:27 +0000 UTC]
So that's your only options? One of two opposite extremes? Believe nothing or believe everything? I'll use my judgement to discern knowledge from both methods of information gathering the best I can and call both extremes foolishness, thankyou very much.
