True words and it always be. [MoreΒ escalated - reason in this case is also "cause and effect" as well.]

Just have to add, for me this says don't let others run your life , your mind, your soul. Don't be brain washed and or corrupted by 'organizations' . I believe I am a very spiritual person, but however not belonging to any one religion. I can separate the two. I have grown up seeing too many hypocritical, narrow minded, judgmental people hiding behind their religion.

Indeed a great quote, but it means more than what it says. You see, buddha like other sages across all religion stated similar things, but depending on the source that reach ppl out there, many find buddha's quotes to be more common. The fact is, he warned us to not just listen to him but rather use instinct (not the regular one we refer to using the word "instinct") to judge the right thing. Problem is, our so called instinct is corrupted by foul emotion, and desires. Once again, unless the root is good, a tree can't be a healthy one. So as buddha stated, knowing the 4 noble paths is the way to remove those "bad" things from our selves. Only then that our so called instinct/common sense can reach a level where it will be able to distinguish right from wrong. So technically speaking, THIS quote is not for ordinary ppl like us, but for those who have attained that level. It's like saying, use common sense to understand physics. But while that rule may apply to most ppl, if you try to use that common sense to understand quantum physics, you are screwed.

Basically he is saying the truth is in all of us, so we should trust ourselves above all others, we can be our own teachers because Dharma/God/Love/Truth is in us all, it just takes trial and error. Which is what life is all about, our own experiences good and bad accumulating and making us the people we are destined to be and helping us to find truth and beauty in the universe, some may never achieve this, but everyone has the possibility to achieve it.

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it. This is fearlessness, and it is love." - Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha)
