Description A member of the pack is jealous at the choice of meat the other has. It became very angry and growled, but the other did not relent holding on to the flank tightly.

I have really hesitated to put up the recent series of photos, these images while incredibly powerful are also very dangerous. The last thing I want is for this type of image to be used on websites or blogs that are anti wolf. To me having the amazing chance to document these animals furthered my respect and understanding for the animal. I am posting them hoping they will impact you in the same way.

When a wolf makes a kill many different types of animals partake in the kill, there are 17 different types of vertebrates that have been documented taking advantage of the source of food provided by the wolves. Coyotes, Fox, Bear, Ravens, Eagles, Hawks just to name a few.

It is hard for us to understand the value of a meal in our culture of easily obtainable food, but in a world without grocery stores and restaurants animals struggle for every calorie obtained and one meal can be the difference between life or death for an animal in the wild. The wolves do a huge service for the community in this regard.

It is a mechanism of returning energy to lower levels on the ecosystem and promotes diversity and well being for the system as a whole. Being mortal we are naturally fearful of death and transfer that fear to witnessing the death of other species or animals, but on a ecological perspective one animals death renews the life of many.

I want to apologize about the watermark, Its important that we remember how political this animal is here in the region.

*All of my wildlife images are of animals free with no bounds and were taken on publicly accessible lands. *

I see what you mean by this image being dangerous to pro-wolf sites and the like, but this is an amazing shot, and I'm glad you chose to share it on DA. It looks incredable, you totally deserve the DD for it, congrats!

This is dangerous for children due to the cruelty of the sceene. For me need a Mature content, but DD permit all on DA. Other images less cruel than thishave applied by staff member the Mature content on them.

I think to have just explain it well, also in my journal.
another scene like this, without DD has applied by staff member
the Mature Content.
My 7 y.o. niece have cried for so long, when have seen this.
she is so young and don't know the cruelty.
if in this picture there was the mature content, she don't seen it, cause we put the filter for what she can see and what not.
Anyway is nothing again your pictures, as I said DA have different rules for different people.

Well written and well photographed. This is one of the beauties of the wolves, they are beautiful and only hunt for their survival, unlike a majority of the human race who hunts just for the antlers of a buck and some trophy.

I absolutely love your description and the capture of the wolves.
You deserve the Daily Deviation.

It's so great you have had the chance to see these animals free. This is an incredible experience! How far from them were you when you took a picture of them?

I really dont know, im adding a range finder to the list of equipment i use so i can remain within legal limits, i felt i was far away at the time but in hindsight i think i was closer than i realized.
either way this image was shot with the equivilant reach of 1040mm's worth of optics.

I know exactly what you mean with the political thing, honestly i was a bit puzzled when i saw the name of this photo and immediately wanted to see what was up. I am relieved with what you said about how they provide food for other animals and how we don't value food. I really despise how politicians try to call them killers, when there are so many other animals that hunt, i mean you might as well go and kill every single other predator, as well as humans, because if they want to call a wolf a killer, then we are killers as well. Its childish when people get angry simply because a wolf hunts their cattle, when THEY can do something about it, instead of choosing the easy way and killing these poor animals. Like how Palin is trying to kill them, man kind is just going to be responsible for the extinction of another species of animal, and its going to be one of the most important ones.
But anyways sorry for the paragraph
This is an amazing picture. You have captured them in their true nature and beauty.

no worries the longer the comment the better i say,
i named the title because there certainly is a sense of greed in the wolves eyes as it fights for what the other has, however the wolves give so much back to the community labeling them a greedy species would be impossible!

I'm nowhere near as eloquent as you are, but I love the wolf, think it's a crime what people do to them and how they've been hunted down to near extinction, gone from many places they used to inhabit. Man has a long history of doing this, pushing out anything that gets in his way of greed for more and more land. In my country it was done to the native Americans and continued with nearly every animal species that was "inconvenient". I suppose it will never stop, no matter how many people are enlightened but it sure doesn't hurt to keep trying!

I think you verbalized the plight of the wolf extremely well and all I can say is WELL DONE!

You know, it's pictures like this that let you really see the beauty of the wolf. They have a right to their anger/greed. Wolves are precious creatures that should be cherished and loved, for they are a hell of a lot better than most people. All those bastards who say that wolves are bad can rot in hell. Sure they kill, but they kill to live, unlike us humans, who kill just for the sake of killing. When you look at our two species, who's more savage?
...Heh, sorry about the rant... I have a very strong opinion about wolves. I love them, hence my name. Great picture. It really does show them in their natural beauty. Good job!

very educational, and i agree with this, but not only that but i leanred a little more in the value of how that goes around. i knew one die for some others sake, but i diddnt think it would benefit others that deliver the kill and such.

in anycase, great shot

Wonderful photo, it is perfectly focused and documents the wildlife scene in an admirable way! The composition of the shot is nice, too. It would be an excellent cover for an issue of a nature magazine.

Sorry for the long comment, but I feel the need to share a few thoughts:
It's such a shame you feel the need to apologise for sharing this great shot because of politics.

I doubt there are 'anti-lion' or 'anti-bear' campaigns in your area, and I reckon, globally speaking, they'd more likely to harm humans.

I live in a country where wolves are protected and sometimes attack sheep in remote regions, but no one, even the owners of the sheep, feels the need to go 'anti-wolf'. They get conpensations in cash, and after all, it's just an animal following its instincts.

Wolves have been, and always will be fantastic animals.

It's sad how misunderstood they are by the public.

I'm far too young to understand Wolves in many ways, but pictures can only explain so much about an animal that has so many different sides of character.
