It was a good throwback to the older style of the series, and the different approaches it took to the items and dungeons helped too. Implementing those into other titles could be very useful for future games.

I agree completely, a worth sequel to ALTTP. I found that the new touchscreen was very useful and easy to get used to with item selection, actually I felt the same way with WW on the WiiU as well. That's how to use a touchscreen properly.

It had quite a task following up to that game; I consider A Link to the Past the best of the series because everything after it owes something to what that game was able to do. Plus, it was the first time the main story was really fleshed out, you could get a sense of relating to the cast of the game, and the updated graphics and game engine were put to great use to create a memorable world full of adventure.
As I played through ALBW, when I got to Lorule for the first time and heard that familiar music, I was hit with a massive wave of nostalgia and felt so content.

Ah yes, it was really wonderful for nostalgia. Nintendo were really brave with this game and I'm glad they took such a step. It was a risk, but a successful one at that.

They have tried a few new things, like the more focused/important but smaller overworld in Skyward Sword; I don't think that worked quite as well.

I do have to say I like the graphics and the soundtrack, and some of the dungeons are pretty well designed, but it could have been a bit more. Why such a focus on birds when your entire society is literally within walking distance?

I-Redeemer-I In reply to janus-006 [2014-11-03 12:43:09 +0000 UTC]
The graphics and the soundtrack are two of the main problems I have with SS actually. The graphics give me a headache and eye strain, because everything is blurry and they have this water-colour effect for backgrounds and it truly messes with my eyesight. And the soundtrack was also not very impressive, I found myself wishing for music from past Zelda games. The only musical piece I like is the Goddess' song thing but it's not a personal favourite of mine or anything.
And yes, the whole bird thing is kind of... well, goofy. And this sky-travel that's forced upon us, I'd really prefer to go on foot.

janus-006 In reply to I-Redeemer-I [2014-11-03 13:07:48 +0000 UTC]
That's a fair assessment, actually. The art style was based on the Impressionist techniques of Cezanne and other artists, so while it looks showy I can understand why it looks awkward, especially at distance. I already have glasses, so I didn't have much of a problem. And of course, the soundtrack will be down to individual tastes; I have no worries with you saying you didn't like it. Some people have complained about the soundtrack not standing out as much.
There is also an issue with the ending as well; it actually causes quite a few problems and retroactively ruins quite a bit of character development. Plus, Fi is so irritating as to make Navi seem likeable, and as for the bits where you deal with Scrapper... urgh.

Ah yes, I understand. It seems that SS was a hit or miss with many people.
I haven't completed the game yet, but I'm just about there, I think. Although I do know what happens, and I am aware that this is an origin story. However I'm not the biggest fan of the timeline, I don't see why we had to force one to be honest, but I do like how some Zelda games are linked. For example, it's obvious that MM is a sequel to OoT and TP comes after OoT.
Ugh Fii, she is getting on my nerves. I dislike this silly "robot" speak of hers with all her percentages and her ballet dancing is really not anything special. When she sings, with an open mouth, it's actually creepy beyond all reasoning haha! And actually, I liked Navi. I know many didn't, but I have zero beef with her and she's my second favourite companion, Midna being the first.

The 'official' timeline was, admittedly, a pretty controversial choice. I doubt that one was really intended, and each game is like a separate legend unless there are specifically stated links.
And I admit it's nice to see Navi fans, most of the flak she gets is undeserved. The way people go on about her, you'd think she never shut up.

I-Redeemer-I In reply to janus-006 [2014-11-04 11:44:39 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I feel the timeline was just thrown out there because fans were like "WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR ZELDA". That's something I've noticed about the Nintendo fandom, they're super spoiled to the point where they feel comfortable with just demanding things.
Yeah, Navi really isn't that bad. I don't understand how people are saying that she's always shouting "hey" or "listen" because she only does that at key points where you're still in the tutorial stage, or when you target enemies. And it's hardly intrusive, it's the same level of loudness as the Z-targeting sound. If people have problems with Navi, it's most likely because they weren't very good at the game and she was trying to guide them.

It can be an issue dealing with fans of anything... usually, Nintendo fans will complain about things being the same, then when the company tries to change things, they'll complain about how it sucks now, then things will go back to normal and they'll complain about the things they complained about being removed. It just makes you want to hurt them.

Hahaha whenever they start their nonsense I just cut them down with a "you're such a wet blanket" comment or something of the like. I don't work for Nintendo but that doesn't mean I can't get angry when people have unreasonable demands. If you're going to slander the CEO of a company like that, you better have an idea of how you can do their job better before you demand their forced retirement.

Not to mention that Miyamoto and his staff do put in a lot of effort. In fact, he actually regretted working to a deadline with Wind Waker because he didn't get to have as much put in as he would have liked. Not to mention all the shout-outs in the series, continuity nods and little things to actually please the fans. Nothing will be perfect, you have to try new things as well as keeping the core pretty similar. I don't have the first idea about game designing, so I don't complain unless it's something REALLY jarring - and then, I try to find out the reasoning behind the change so I can take on a rational debate.

Yes exactly, they all worn darn hard. And remember how Iwata cut his pay by half just so that he could help the company. I'm not a complainer either unless something is actually bad, hahaha. But then again, "bad" is in the eye of the beholder... but as long as there are no personal attacks, it's all well and good.
